Long time amateur hack here. Got started in the 80s with a hand-me-down Pentax SLR and the high school darkroom. In more recent times I've had a foot or two in the digital world but I keep coming back to film. I get enough "virtual reality" in my day job as a database wrangler. Lately, I've been participating at the local college darkroom with some silver gelatin printing and trying to zero in on what exactly it is I'm trying to do. I have some aspiration to "fine art" photography I suppose, and this means working out a printing process. I like my small film cameras (mostly 120 folders and TLR) and I don't LF yet, so I'm starting down the path of scan > digital neg > alt process (TBD?). And of course with these interests I found Photrio!

Welcome to Photrio! I do a lot of Alt printing, mainly carbon transfer, kallitype, and gum, either with LF neg direct or from digi-neg.
So cool, I'm really wanting to get into that stuff. Seems like cyanotype/salt print/VDB is a good starting point. Next step for me is figuring out how I'm going to make digital negs. I'm going to give it a shot with my laser printer, but I understand this will only give me halftones and no real grays. I'm dragging my feet on an inkjet for all the usual reasons. I'm going to see if I can use the local college digital imaging lab, but from talking to them they have all the usual issues like clogs and whatnot over there.
