Hi APUG

I'm a 22-year-old Masters student from Hyderabad, India. I'm an amateur and I had decided to start on film. I had recently purchased a Nikon FM with a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8. I've started shooting on black and white film. Being a student, I'm limited by budget and also due to the lack of availability of film. I'm planning to purchase a lens soon. I would be thankful if you could suggest a good lens and also some tips on how to start out and improve my skill.

Comments and suggestions are welcome.

Welcome to APUG!

May I make a suggestion: you have a nice lens already, why not invest, instead of a new lens, in more film? I've used a 55mm lens exclusively for more than a decade.

Welcome to APUG! You have great lens and great camera - you don't need anything more at start.
Tip: come closer. Robert Capa's tip "If your photographs aren't good enough, you're not close enough" are what I see as a good tip for every beginner (and not only for beginners).
Beside use one lens and one body - good tip is to use only one film and one developer for start (let's say one year).
Don't be afraid to show your work, and don't be offended is critique is hard --> this is the only way to get better - and this is the goal.

Welcome to the pond. There is a lot of great advise on APUG, just use the search feature to get started. Most of the old school 35mm photographers probably started off with a similar rig as you. My start off advise is pick one film, one developer learn to get decent negs and then work on your image making with what you have already. Once you grow out of that you will know.

As suggested.... don't start worrying about glass right now. Your 50/1.8 is going to serve you well. Get some film, get out and shoot, then after running through 20 or 30 rolls will you find what you truly need for a lens.
