Hello from Estonia (and from Finland)

Hi, everybody!

My name is Andres and I'm 25. I've been a member of APUG for almost a year now. My homecountry is tiny Estonia but at the moment I live in Helsinki, Finland (for my PhD studies). I've been an analog shooter since 1997. I started developing and printing my own B&W photos eight years ago when I managed to assemble a small darkroom into a small cupboard in my parents house. Lately I haven't been visiting my parents too often, but when I have, I've also been able to do all my developing and printing in my very small darkroom. Exactly a month ago I moved to Helsinki and left all my darkroom equipment back in Estonia. I figured that it's the end of my hobby. But I did a little searching here and today I got a new enlarger and a lot of new darkroom stuff to set up a darkroom here in Helsinki. And everything works just fine and looks practically new! The enlarger is a Meopta Axomat 4 (not the best I guess, but looks a lot better than my old Leningrad 4) with a nikkor 50mm 2.8 lens (did they come with nikkor lenses originally?) and a colour head (good also for variable contrast printing, right?). The only thing missing are the chemicals at the moment. But I'm hoping to get some soon and try my new darkroom out. Couple of rolls already waiting. Oh, and the darkroom will be set up to my bathroom here, which is quite roomy compared to my previous dark-cupboard.

So I guess I just wanted to say hello, and that I'm happy to be able to continue with my hobby also here in Helsinki.





Everything I got today is on the picture (sorry I don't have a better picture). There is a lot of stuff and I don't know what to do with some of it. Can anyone tell what can be done with these things:

1) Unicolor accessories for simple color printing, uniguide exposure calculator, uniwheel filter set.
2) Gino film splicer D-III, super-8 regular-8 & 16mm (does it cut 35mm film also?)

Welcome Andres from Washington, DC ! The unicolor stuff is useful if you do want to try printing color at home. Your enlarger is capable of printing color, so if you ever get the bug, you're all set. The film splicer is for motion picture film, and 35mm motion picture film was never really an amateur format (very expensive!!!), so the splicer was most likely never intended for anything bigger than 16mm.

Welcome, Andres, from near Washington, DC. Have fun in Finland. What is the subject of your Ph.d. work? I had great fun printing in a bathroom during my Ph.d. studies. It got me out of the library for a time.

The eopta's were sold without lenses and are excellent enlargers, well engineered. Meopta's own range of lenses is excellent, the top versions are actually Schneider lens cells.

That looks like a Phillips timer, it's a good one with a meter as well, which with the separate dial calculator could be used to read the paper grade needed.

Anscojohn- my PhD subject is unclear at the moment. But it will be something to do with either nanoparticles and bacteriophages in the environment or antibiotic resistance genes in the environment. I have to make up my mind during August.

Although local sources can be very convenient; Finland is within the EU, so ordering from a UK or German supplier may prove more economical if the quantity of materials is sufficient to account for shipping charges.

Last year I was running around with my DigiSnapper, even bought Camille a DigiSnapper for her birthday. Her birthday is July 23rd., but this weekend I gave
her My Minolta SRT-101. Which was my first 35mm SLR, we went shopping to get her some film, and she was shocked to find out that it is almost impossible to find film in a Department Store, or Drug Store anymore. I buy most of my film online now, so it was sad to see the lack of availability.

Hopefully enough of us can begin to convert our friends back to Photography !

A cheery hello to APUG from way Downunder (how far is Helsinki from Australia!?).

By way of mention, pathogenic resistance to antibiotics is of great interest to me as a renal transplant patient; it's a subject I study in some depth in parallel with my Nephrologist. My area of interest is eSBL e.coli — one of the "intelligent" superbugs usually present harmlessly in the environment but now emerging as a serious every-day threat due to A/B super-resistance.

I also live in Finland, but a bit further up north. You could go to telefoto in Helsinki to buy materials, but I usually order from macodirect or from ag photographic.
