Hiya. My name is STRAKER. Well, not really but you get the point.

I use both digital and 35mm, but as I get older, I find that I prefer to use my rapidly growing pile of 35mm equipment. I recently picked up a Praktica MTL5 for a tenner!!!. So okay, the selftimer is a little tempremental. BUT it has a half decent lens, and is built like a T62 tank. And I am using it. And it handles just great.

One day, people will wake up and smell the coffee abouit digital. I found out recently that your average sensor is only good for about 60,000 pictures. My Nikon F301 must be at least 20 years old, and still works PERFECTLY. I do not like the build quality of most digital cameras. Call me old fashioned.

Call me old fashioned.

But I thought you said your name was Straker but not really!

Welcome. Are you in the UK? your use of the word "tenner" suggests so.

Straker - hello and welcome to APUG from western New England. And I'm a bit old fashioned myself.

Hello Straker,
Welcome from near Washington, DC.

I understand those d****al things make decent light meters.

As a fellow Prakticaphile, I know the "L" series cameras clank like a T-62 and they sure are easy to load. I have a few negs in the files, taken with Prakticas, Pentaxes, Ollies, Canons, Nikons over several decades. I truly believe the images I love best were made with Prakticas.

Welcome Straker. You don't happen to work for S.H.A.D.O. do you?

I like the Prakticas, I have a BX20 and a few Zeiss Jena lenses.

Thanks for the words of welcome people. Do you know, I got a right brick batting on another forum yesterday is because I dared to suggest that MOST(underlined twenty times in bright neon green) modern digital cameras suffer from a build quality that is very suspect. I was merely voicing my opinion. I just do not know waht is wrong with people.

It's usually self justification for spending too much on a new toy.

I heard that. I look at this way; if you have a camera that you dare not use in a bit of rain, are terrified of getting it a little dusty, or are scared of the occasional tiny bump or bang (not that I am advocating using an SLR for a football, but accidents can and do happen) in my book it is simply a waste of money. I think in todays climate, what with the credit crunch, and worries about the environment, it would be better for people to learn how to 'make do' for a bit. I own two Fuji digicams, and whilst I will admit to taking some nice pictures with them, when it comes to build or optical quality, they cannot even hold a candle to my recently aqquired Praktica, never mind my Nikon gear. I think you are 100% right in what you say.
