heavest 35MM

Over the years I have some rather heavy 35mms, F and F2 with motor drive, Miranda and Konica T were not lightweights, recently I picked up a Minolta 9000 with motor drive flash and command grip. The body 2 AA, motor drive 12, 2 flash set up 8,and command grip take 4 for a total 24 AA batteries, then add a lens. I have not yet weight it, but it is sure heavy. Any others in the same category?

I sold my Canon 1V-HS for a 645 setup because the medium format camera was about the same weight with a much larger negative. I never did use the automated features on the 1V anyway. It's an absolute monster.

Comparing like for like i.e. a camera with motordrive, all necessary batteries and a 50mm prime I had assumed that the F5 was probably the heaviest 35mm camera or as close to the heaviest as to make no difference but it appears as if I may be wrong?

I don't know what the heaviest camera is, but a heavy camera does help cut down vibration and perhaps some models should made from lead.

I have a Leica R8, and with some of the larger lenses like the 19/2.8 it definitely feels like a boat anchor

I shoot the same thing (assuming you mean the F-1 New because that's the only one with the NiCd pack) all the time handheld. It's a beast but I find it very comfortable to shoot. Not so much to carry around without a bag though! And when I add the FN-100 back, it's time for the tripod...

When I used it, I was in college shooting sports events. Now I'm older and wiser and also a bad back from hauling camera gear. If you're still using a new Canon F1 with a motor, I can give you a deal with motor drive, high power nicad pack, charger and a dummy battery.

I still use my F1 30 years later without the motor drive. It's the best camera I own.

My usage with heavy cameras has been Nikon F4 (motor drive) for sporting events. Other than sporting events it was too heavy and I did not need the motor drive. In the Nikon series the F3HP is as heavy as I want to go.

One reason I picked the 9000 was that it was the only pro level AF with an old fashioned detachable motor drive, which is rather odd as the Minolta XK came as either without a motor drive and a motor drive version. By the time the 9000 had come out Canon had released a pro level 35mm with an integrated motor drive with the T90 and Minolta 7000 had a rather nice integrated winder. I don't often need a motor drive, wildlife and some sports, I like having it available if needed.

Contarex Bullseye is pretty heavy even sans lens or Motor drive (over 1 kg) probably designed by the same Person who designed heavy german tanks in WW2. Overengineered but a very good camera and anti-mugger tool.

Alpa Si2000 camera 1085 grams with normal lens. The body is made from machined brass. Very little camera shake with that baby.

I thought Nikon F5 was big and heavy but it wasn't mine and I don't recall what it had attached but just that it was a monster.

My contax camera bodies aren't particulary big or heavy but I think the RTSIII is more so. However, all the zeiss lenses have metal barrels and when passing through airport security the numpties suspicions were aroused becasue all my lens were so heavy. So off came all the lens caps, apertures opened and looked through. I had to explain that everyone else was carrying cheap plastic barrel lenses.

My Canon F-1n without batteries weights approximately 820 gr. with the FD 55mm f1.2 "Godzilla lens" you need to add 565 gr, plus with a battery, the leather case, the hood and a roll of 35mm I don't think I get much far away from the 1.5 treshold.

I love the camera but for street photography is a pain to carry around...of course you need a wide strap.

I was struggling very hard to hold the camera and have the time to focus correctly and frame decently with that beast during this selfie.

The Rolleiflex SL2000 and SL35M look like medium format cameras compared to a Yashica Fx-3, or other small 35mm SLR.

I am using the one of the heaviest setup in apug , zorki , 135mm hektor , kodak fluro ektar 111 f:1.5 and lomo anamorphic cine lens.

Total weight is more than 10 kilograms I cant think a better setup until cooke xv or goerz dagor

Are you sure about this? As that is very very heavy.

May I ask if the picture you posted is a reversal left/right flip of your avatar?

No no, the pic of my avatar is taken with a Pentax LX and a M 50mm f1.4, usually to test a fast lens wide open since I don't have many good models around I use...me.

Also the selfie as first shot helps me remembering which camera and lens I was using when I look at them many months later, sometimes without them even after a week I forget which camera and lens I was using for a certain roll, I assume I'm getting old.

P.S. I used that camera in Oxford last Saturday with a FD35mm f2 and it was a pain to walk with...I was dreaming about my Pentaxes all day long.

I think the heaviest camera Nikon made was the F4s, at 1400gm, or just over three pounds (no lens attached.)

The Beseler Topcon Super D did not have a mirror. Instead it had a prism that split the image between the viewing prism and the film. It was very heavy.

I guess over the years it must have put on some weight as the New Canon F-1 manual only lists it at 795g body only - 1,030g with FD 50mm f/1.4 lens. Maybe measure it's waistline too . . .

Canon Site on New F-1 shows 795 g (body only with Eye-Level Finder FN).
I weighed my New F-1 body only with the AE Finder at 838g.

My Topcon RE Supers are heavy even without a lens attached. The Ricoh TLS 401 is very heavy for some reason. I tried one of my Minolta X-700s with the MD-1 motor drive, the Power Grip II, a 360 PX flash and a 35-70/3.5 MD. The MD-1 takes 8 AA batteries. The Power Grip II takes 6 AA batteries and the 360PX takes 4 AAs. The batteries alone are heavy.
