After contacting De Vere regarding my neg pop (see previous post), they got back to me saying that on my particular model it had a piece of glass in the filter draw. But the problem is they do not make them for my model anymore or keep any. Does anybody know where I can get my hands on a piece of heat absorbing glass and how much I am likely to pay.
You might try contacting Focal Point. (I think that they are still around). A search should locate them for you. They deal in enlarger parts and repairs. Good luck.
When I was looking for such a thing (as it happens I found one that worked for my enlarger), the recommendation I got was to contact Corning directly, and have them fabricate it. The glass must be cut before it is tempered, so it is not possible, as I understand it, to get, say, some large sheet of heat absorbing glass and cut it down to size.
If it goes into the filter drawer shouldn't it be a pretty standard size? I think freestyle lists it for various enlargers. Last time I looked prices seemed very reasonable.
FJ Gray company can supply heat absorbing glass, tempered or not, cut to size. I recently got an Elwood 5x7 enlarger that was missing some of its heat absorbing glass and ordered from them. I went with non-tempered because it's much cheaper. If it cracks from heat, I'll order tempered. Go to "fjgray.com." njb
Heat absorbing is only the function that any peace of glass in the filter draw will fix. All glass is opaque at infrared (heating radiation). On this characteristic is based the greenhouse effect. There is no special heat absorbing glass. Heat reflecting, yes, but not heat absorbing. It is simply that issue that glass allows visible light to pass through while stopping the infrared.
