Yeah, this keeps happening..... A Lot.....................NYT pay-wall.
If the OP(s) would post the name of the photographer, or a link with basic info about the photographer, it would farm a bigger Response/Discussion. :wondering:

big quote from NYT:
MONTREAL — Braulio Rocha, a Portuguese janitor at a Montreal synagogue, was about to begin his daily floor mopping routine some years ago when he heard a frantic voice: The photographer assigned to shoot a bris, a ritual circumcision, hadn’t shown up, and the baby’s grandmother was panicking.

Mr. Rocha, an amateur photographer, had recently arrived in Canada from Madeira with $50 in savings and a beat-up old Canon camera that he always carried with him in his car. Wearing his gray and blue polyester janitor’s uniform, a long key ring dangling from his pocket, he recalls, he summoned up the courage and asked the forlorn grandmother if he could shoot the baby’s bris — for free.

She agreed, and a new career was born."

That is a great story. Too bad that NYT has hit hard times and must charge for everything.

The Trumpian notion that NYT has "hit hard times" conflicts with their impressive growth of readership...and complaint that they "must charge for everything" reflects a failure to understand capitalism (in which we pay for what we want).

I don't subscribe to NYT because I prefer Guardian and cannot pay for everything that interests me.

Frankly I have always supported free press, but then maybe they do not have the same understanding that I have of the meaning of free press.

In olden times, others (the advertisers) did the paying.
And we paid by buying things as a result of the advertisements.
It doesn't work that way (very well) any more.

I hope they tipped him generously.

Shooting a bris is no slice of cake. I've done it many times and knowing where and when and what to shoot separates the boys from the men. I can keep going with the puns but it's just a cheap cut.

Honestly though, it takes guts to say "I'll do it".

Some people just do it for the tips.
