Maybe it's like a good single malt?...

I always figured the reason people bragged on how long Rodinal lasts is because it's not that good of a developer. Sounds like they must use something else as their primary developer, so the Rodinal sits on the shelf unused. I bought a bottle a couple years ago thinking I'd try it, but there it sits. I use 510 Pyro and HC110.

One reason Rodinal hangs around is because it is often diluted 1:50 or 1:100, so even if you do use it often not much gets used.

How did the liquid appear?

I have some from 6-7 years back but I think it got exposed to too much sunlight.

It's very brown and although I don't think the oxygen hurts it too much due to the syrup, I remember reading sunlight can kill it.

HC-110 is amazing stuff, cheap, long lasting and darn it, the results are good! I got some HC-110 first and bought some Microphen and DD-X to try. At a convenient point a smaller bottle of the HC-110 filled to the top I started using DD-X and it is good but it doesn't seem to be that much better than HC-110, if better at all. I used some of each today, Delta 400 in DD-X 1+4 and T-Max 100 in HC-110 dilution B 1+31, both worked well.

HC-110 is always a bit yellow to me. The syrup is yellow to begin with. DD-X is clear by comparison until it starts to go bad.

It was tea brown, and the D dilution was yellow tinted but nothing disconcerting. It was stored in a box, in the cardboard box the single developer was packaged in, so it was in the dark all its life.

I have some pretty old HC-110 lying around. Now I need to test it. From what I have seen PC-TEA also lasts a long time.

And I was worried about my 6 year old orange syrup...guess I'll dive right in with it.
