I purchased a Schneider 305 mm G-Claron f9 and after receiving it and doing an inspection of the lens I have found either haze or fungus on the back element. I not to familiar with this as i have usually purchased new. Any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Looks like fungal growth starting, but is hard to tell from such a low resolution image.

Have you tried cleaning it?

If you paid a premium price for the lens, I would not touch it and return it for a refund.

If you got a reasonable deal, then I would try cleaning the exterior of the rear element with 50/50 mixture of ammonia and peroxide, followed by lens cleaner.

Macfred, I think that's more applicable to where the glass meets the mount, but I can always be wrong... (I have been known to be wrong)

I neither see this as Schneideritis of any kind.
Yes, with such I think of dislamination from the edge. BUT there are photos of seemingly Schneideritis, starting at center, under vacuum thus.

Anyway, the OP's question is pure academic.
The artefact has a degree where image degradation seems likely and lens disassembly is appropriate.

I have not tried cleaning it, i wanted to first figure out what I was dealing with. I paid $375 for the lens so not sure if that is a fair price or not. The seller described the item as in pristine condition. Would it be better to send it out for cleaning?

If the seller described that lens as "pristine", I personally would then assume they had not even looked at it and would be suspicious of any other claims as to the shutter function, etc. and so on.

$375 is about fair market value for a pristine lens of this type (according to current "sold" value on Ebay); this is not a pristine lens.

If it were me, I would just return it and try again somewhere else, but that is my personal opinion...

If the seller discribed it as "pristine" he's either a liar , blind or a fool .
The lens is clearly faulty , you paid for one the was "pristine" i.e in good condition .
Why would you then pay to get it repaired ?
Unless it's an oily deposit from your shutter that wipes off after you unscrew the lens unit , your better off without it .

Get it sent back and get your money back .
Then get another from a reputable seller .

Send it back. To suggest this is a “pristine” lens is a gross deception. Just return it for a refund and avoid this seller.

Did you get it off eBay ?
If so escalate is asap to the resolution centre .
They will do a packaging note that includes tracking and return costs , one it's been received you get a full refund .
Then leave negative feedback to warn others .

I got a Minolta lens early last month that turned out to be mouldy , listed as used and the photos were a bit back lit which ( deliberately , I think ) hid this fact .
Seller tried giving me some BS so I escalated , sent back and got a full refund , no messing .

Where did you get it ?

Just to add , if it was off eBay , in the part for contacting the seller , select the option of " not as described / not as pictures " and it automatically starts from that date the returns process .
Saves you waiting , especially as they are being unhelpfull / rip off merchant's !

Bought elsewhere , contact your credit card issuer that you payed with stating that you have been defrauded out of money , as they insure against this and will refund you .
It's their problem then getting the money back off the seller .
