Have question about 8x10 Wehman and Deardroff camera

I am thinking of selling my Deardroff 8x10 as for me it just doesn’t seem to fit the bill. I am thinking of a Wehman Camera and was wondering if anyone here has used one and if so what are you thoughts and opinions?

The weight of the Dorff is not the issues as that doesn’t bother me in the slightest I just don’t like the way it handles as I am used to my Canham 57.

I would appreciate any comments and onions you have on the Wehman.

I don't have a 5x7 Canham, but I do have a 5x7 Deardorff.

I can add my 0,05€
I bought the Wehman mainly because of it`s light weight. I find it very easy to handle, and I especially love the assymetrical back swing feature, use it all the time.
Another plus is that it`s quite slim when folded, so I can pack four filmholders with the dark cloth and the camera in the main compartment of my f.64 backpack, in addition to the three holders in the outer pocket.
And last, Bruce Wehman is a great guy!

I agree, Bruce is a great guy and makes a nice camera. OTOH if you like your Canham 5x7 and are used to it then why not get a Canham 8x10? Same basic desing and controls, etc. Hey, and Keith is also a great guy.

One reason is the price. the Canham is $3K where the Wehman is $1800. Bg difference in savings. I just want to make sure that what ever direction I go the camera will support the lenses I use. The biggest lens I have is a Rodenstock 360 f6.8 huge peice of glass. I love the Canham but the Wehman just looks like it is built like a tank.

How long did it take you to get used to the differnece in stetting up, etc?

I have been contemplating selling my Deardorff and getting a Wehman because of the weight difference, but the unusual set up makes me question the decision.

The Wehman is built like a tank, OTOH your 360 lens won't even beginto stress the Canham. I have beensuinga Canham 57 Traditional for many years and every once in a while mount a 300 5.6 Apo symmar on the camera. Works fine although most of the time the beast lens stays inthe studio and the 300 Fuji A is in the field.

The Canham will handle much larger glass than that. I have a 480mm (and a 1000mm) and the Canham handles the weight fine. You can tilt the standard forward and it will lock in place and not creep on you.

The same is true for the Wehman.
However, I would not attempt to mount a really heavy lens on either camera at full bellows extension without a tripod under the lens.
