I saw on Etsy an old Kodak disc camera made into a clock, probably the best thing that happened to that camera. God awful cameras.

When I was at school a lab technician was doing that with old clocks, that was over 50 years ago He seemed to sell quite a number.

I mean, I don't hate the idea, and you could argue that the amount of time spent arranging and affixing all of the parts might amount to a justifiable price markup...but $650? Eesh.

I won't lie, though; I'm tempted to do this to one of my dead cameras to put on my own wall.

How many hours spent to disassemble and mount parts artfully on the backing? ...with hundreds of parts, even at $8/hr minimum wage, there is a good markup to the inherent value.

FYI etsy totally sucks for buyer protection. I recently had a seller try to scam me - sold me something he didn't actually have - and he was doing this to a bunch of other people too. You could see just by reading the feedback. Etsy's response was if you can't work it out with the seller, contact your credit card company. Which I did and got refunded etc.

But the problem was that this seller was doing this for months, and etsy let him.

There's a company that specifically does this with iPhones called https://gridstudio.cc/. They're fairly well known among my professional peers (iPhone app developers) One of my other hobbies is retrocomputing, and I'm an iOS and Mac software engineer for my day job with a background in electrical engineering. I get a lot of people commenting on how much I must love the stuff they make, but I actually really don't like it at all. I think designed objects are more than the sum of their parts, and there's nothing particularly interesting to me about a device all splayed out and unconnected like that.
I do kind of like the exploded cameras this guy has, because they show how the parts actually fit together to create something, but I still wouldn't buy one. I like my cameras (and computers, and iPhones) working and enjoy the process of repair and restoration too.
