Hassy use = Zero for 2.5 years.. Sell It?

Pondering selling my Hassy kit because I have not picked it up to use it in two and a half years (it has been exercised, not just abandoned). Never purchased any of it new, sold off my Mamiya 645 1000s system to get the Hassy in time to take it on our honeymoon out west. It makes great images.

As my father was dying he gave me his Rollie and I had that CLAd and use that out of respect and fondness. Certainly is lighter.

The Hassy is a 500CM
80mm 2.8
120mm Makro (CLAd)
50mm
2 12 backs
1 16 back with mask (CLAd)
filters and such.

So should I sell this kit? Is there a fair price to ask for all of it.

Selling it probably makes sense, though that's perhaps an odd thing for me to say, as I have several cameras that have spent that much time idle.

You will probably get a better price and maybe even sell it quicker if you sell it al la carte. I would offer up the body, 80 and at least 1 back as a set, and piece out the rest of it. With the possible exception of the 16 back, there should be a good market for what you have.

As Mark says, the best price references are probably ebay sold listings along with KEH's prices.

Great advice.
The Mamiya 645 1000S Kit and Cabootle went to KEH when they were local on a buying spree. Certainly make it easy, although at wholesale prices.

Only sell it if you need the money or are sure you will not want to use it. That said you'll likely not be all that pleased with what you'll get for it. I've sold a few cameras/lenses I've deeply regretted later...

Do you have a good, trust worthy friend that you can lend it to? I wonder if you actually part with it like that, it'll make you feel like you still want to keep it around.

You'll do better breaking it up- esp. since the 120mm is a (great) specialty lens and will likely appeal more to someone who is already an owner and is likely not to need the rest. I see things go for the highest prices on ebay vs. local market / forums / etc.

Which breed of lenses are they? Price difference between C/CF/CFi is considerable. Recent CLA with receipt will up your value as well.

I'd personally be interested in that masked, CLA'd 16 back

As far as if you should sell it- if you don't shoot it, you don't shoot it, but that is a mighty fine kit you have and I would certainly meditate on it before axing it all.

I sold my 501CM kit 20 minutes ago. Over the last year I had to keep forcing myself to use it, putting under a roll a month through it. I used to shoot with it all the time till I got my RB67 and some other stuff. These thing deserve to be used, if you don't use it sell it. Mine is now in the hands of a young apprentice photographer. Much better on his hands than on a shelf in my house.

More importantly, it makes me feel less guilty for that Leica R8 that just arrived in the post!

Don't sell ! "Lend" it to somebody who will use it. If you don't know somebody keep it. I kept all of my camera's from '65 the first.

These are all CF lenses. You are so right that the 120 Makro is a sweet lens. David Odess did the CLA, new shutter spring, PC contacts time test and all that. Never get out of that lens what I have in it. I sold off the 150 CF after he did my 120 to help pay for the CLA. I know the theory is (or fact) that the 150 is sharper than the 120, but I had no idea how long the 150 would last and a new CLA on the 120 solved that, and it focuses closer.

Not intending to be negative but... I would not lend it to anyone. I've had a LOT of bad luck lending things to people. I either don't get the things back at all or they come back horribly abused... every... single... time.

I think unused cameras start to harbor a grudge after a while. I've got a 645 AFD I haven't touched in six months and it's gotten surly...

My Hasselblad 500/cm was sitting because I rarely shot medium format anymore so I sold it. Now it's being used and loved.

I miss it once in a while but if I decide that I want another one there are plenty out there.

As to the comment about the 150 being sharper than the 120- if anything is true, it's the opposite. The 120 is sharper, almost to the point of excess. That sharpness makes for fantastic macro shots of bugs and flowers, but harsh portraits. The downside of the 150 is that to truly get a tight portrait out of it, you've got to throw on a 16mm extension tube, as it close-focuses to something like 4.5 feet (1.5 meters).

I would not sell it either. First: You might not get the money back that you paid for 3 years ago. Second: The TLR is quite nice but it has its restrictions. If you want to do macros or wide angle shots some day, you may miss the Hasselblad. Third: It does not sound like you need the money so bad. Fourth: Even if the TLR had a CLA, you don´t know if it might need a repair some day. In this case, you still have a back up 6x6.

I also have some gear that I do not use anymore very often, but I would only sell things if they are absolutely redundant. For example I´m thinking about selling the Sonnar 150/4 CS and 250/5,6 for my SL66 since I have absolutely no use for these lenses anymore since I have the 180/4 for my Hasselblad. I may also sell my 50/4 once I get hold of a 50/4FLE some day. I don´t mind selling smaller stuff like extension tubes or magazines either.

I use Fugi film in my Hassleblad, and sometimes my Rollie. I just got an old Cannon F1 and hope to use it soon.
