Hi, I'm looking for some advice on how to make a strap for my 500CM. I've been looking at straps online going for £50 to £120 UK. Is it just me or is that crazy money? Any advice welcome!

thanks in advance

No need to buy the original strap, it´s not even that comfortable. Some years ago I bought a pair of Optech Hasselblad-style clips. Price was around 10 Euro back then. I fitted them to a Carl Zeiss Air Cell strap, which is very comfortable and looks great. As with lenses, Hasselblad and Zeiss is a good match when it comes to camera straps as well ;-)

Hi, I know of three options:
1. The original Hasselblad strap. But as you found out, they are quite expensive.
2. The US made Optech strap. The one I bought has a wide neoprene strap and is very comfortable. I do not know if it is distributed in the UK.
3. Buy the Hasselblad clips from one of the Chinese eBay sellers. Then make your own strap with nylon webbing.

Yes, OPTECH straps are the best. I use one on my Hasselblad and my Nikon F6. Very comfortable and will not slide off your shoulder.

Sometimes you can find used Hasselblad straps in good condition at KEH.com, KEH eBay, Samys eBay, and the other usual suspects, even at Photrio Classifieds and Large Format Photography Forum Classifieds.

I prefer the Hasselblad straps to the optech, but they are a bit dear. Used ones can be found for a reasonable price, but that may take some time. You may be able to find a knackered one for the end clips and make your own.

My favorite straps are the old Tamrac N45 with the padded suede strap center. I found one not long ago packaged for a Hasselblad. I've got a decent collection of the Tamrac straps, for just about every 35mm and medium format camera I have.

It's not an easy DIY project due to the special metal clips required to attach to the body.Nevertheless a 2nd-hand strap shouldn't cost more than $20.

You might want to look at the Hasselblad hand/wrist strap, if you use the Left Hand Grip, the 500 series were designed to be most functional, with.

Clip tip to clip tip on my wrist strap is about 37cm long, I have average large hands, and, unless you're using larger, heaver lenses, than the 50mm/80mm/150mm and between, it's nicer, IMO, to carry on the move, hand griped under the camera, no dangling, or carried like a briefcase, as it's all the more ready to use than a full length, narrow shoulder strap, bag or no bag.

Do find a good shoulder strap, (I do have the 'blad shoulder strap but only as a back up) but give the wrist/hand strap a try; you may just prefer it. ;-)

I purchased the Hasselblad adaptors a couple of months ago. Can't remember who from but looking on the WEX site they stock OpTech straps along with adaptors For Hasselblad. They are also available from Amazon. I have had the strap for a number of years and is by far one of the most comfortable straps I have ever had.
