Hasselblad, I put the lens on without winding the body first, now jammed

First off, before the obligatory "Please send to a technician" (which I agree and appreciate), I have jammed and fixed Hasselblad many times before. But those are mostly mid-shooting, when the camera suddenly jams when shutter release.

This time is a bit different/peculiar.

I was doing a general cleaning, taking the lens, back etc.. off. I laid the body down and the release button accidentally touched the ground and fired the camera. No biggie. However when I put the lens back, I forgot to wind the camera first. So as soon as the lens went it, the leaf shutter is tripped and the camera is jammed.

I panicked a little bit and fiddled around, somehow could wind the crank .. Now the mirror is down, but the lens is loosely attached to the mount but I can not remove it. Loosely in the sense I could turn it around a little bit, but it is not securely attached like normal.

I didnt feel anything is broken (I didn't force anything or hear any noises), so I still have some hope that it is just a complicated jam.

The same happened to me once. I tried resetting the shutter by the inside screw, but there was no way. Finally, I took it to service.

I dont have or work on Hassies but I do get the complaints n remedies.

This problem requires partial disassembly of the camera body. There is one screw which should not be touched because if you loosen it the entire camera will have to be disassembled. Take the camera to a Hasselblad repair man.

Hi guys,

I did it!

I followed the instruction here and the lens came out nicely, cock the camera and lens again and now everything is working like before

Serius' saying to go to a tech is always good advice except for the brave and/or skillful.

And after reading the instructions you say you followed, I have to say you are very, very brave, because that is the most convoluted translation of some language into something resembling English I've seen in a long time.

Very glad you got ur camera working again. It is discussions of things like this that make me appreciate my rolleiflex.

I have used that method in the past. The last time I had a problem I had received a used lens from a major seller who said that the lens was tested. Actually it was not. I put the lens on the camera and the lens fired but did not release [the term the repairman used]. I used the tried and true method that you used and the lens would not recock. In fact the shaft would not turn. I took the camera and lens to the Hasselblad repairman at Samy's Camera and he spent about 45 minutes working on the camera and the lens. That is when I found out about the screw, that if removed requires complete disassembly and reassembly of the camera body. Once the lens was removed it was sent back to the seller for a CLA. The lens works well now. My point is that if the above method does not work or meets strong resistance, stop and have a camera repairman take care of it. I have never been charged by a Hasselblad repairman for getting a lens release. The repairman would have charged me for a CLA and it would have been expensive since it is a long lens. Hence I sent the lens back to the seller for the CLA.

You just started posting on APUG and I do not know you well enough to judge how good you are at camera repairs. Therefore I erred in the direction of caution.

Since I simply can not afford to have a jam toss an often expensive to produce shoot out the window, I am one of the "Brave" ones. I keep not one but two of those special tools handy, one at home and one in the bag / pack the gear is in. So thanks for posting this, it is one of the few demons that are the downside of the Hasselblad system.

I am usually *very* methodical in how I handle the bodies and lenses in terms of status of the shutter and film cocking mechanism but it is always good to be reminded of this potential doozy.

Please take this post in the spirit it is intended -- sharing, not flamebaiting!

The issue you describe is exactly what has kept me from getting a Hasselblad. I've always loved the camera, and the results speak for themselves. But I know I couldn't trust myself to not screw this up, at least occasionally. It does seem a bit perverse to have designed-in penalties for incorrect use of a product. As a result, I went with Bronica gear. It's no Hasselblad, but at least I can be trusted with it.

I am glad the OP was able to get things sorted without an expensive trip to the technician.
