Hi All, I'm just trying to figure out what these focusing screens are. They came in a box labelled Bright-matte 42226 -- that you will see in the photos. there are no notches on them. I cannot really confirm that either do or do NOT have a rainbow. Any luck on guessing what these are? Here's a link to the photos: Photos

This is what i have guessed, but i am unsure. Any help would be super great:

"Hasselblad Acute Matte 42165 - Crosshair - No Grid" [3, 8]
"Hasselblad Acute Matte 42167 - Split Image w/ 6x4.5 Masking - Plain/No Grid" [1, 4]

According to what I found, the Acute Matte screen comes in a box labeled Acute Matte. There was a Bright Matte screen made before the Acute Matte. The Bright-Matte screen was a technical successor to the Octofiber screen and predecessor to the Acute-Matte. This screen was sold only in 1987-88.

I had a similar exercise not so long ago and it is a bit of a nightmare.
Fortunately, I have a Hasselblad with an acute matte d, so I had some way to control together with the pictures and descriptions in Hasselblad brochures. So if you have at least one known screen, it can help.
I also found a 'point light source', in my case, a bare halogen bulb, helpful. It helped me to identify what I believe is an opto fibre screen, i think it's quite unmistakable when compared to the rest.

One thing I discovered, just about every screen is secured in an original but incorrect box! Put away for safe keeping.

that's exactly where i'm getting lost. i dont see the bright matte screen advertised with crosshairs anywhere in their handbook in 1987, so im really at a loss.

Welcome to Photrio.
When looking at used accessories like replaceable focusing screens or viewfinder diopter adjustment lenses, it is important to understand one very common facet of human nature.
Many/most people who install one of those replacements, put the screen or lens that they removed from the camera into the box that the new one came in.
They almost always have the intention to clearly indicate the switch on that box, but human nature being what it is ......

I checked a couple of mine just now and with a old school 15W tungsten incandescent bulb you can see the rainbow and the little lens like circles, can't miss it. With a LED standard light bulb I couldn't see much at all.

As Matt says.
In all probability, the screen from the 42226 box will be installed in the camera and the remaining screens will be pre this date.
Only in limited circumstances would someone replace a newer screen for an older screen.

I take it you've been through all these brochures?

Do you know any provenance of the screens you have?

i have looked briefly, yes. I do not have other screens, as I don't currently own a hassy. I shoot mostly slr & holgas. hassy is not in my budget currently

ah ok, so i do see circle rings going out like etched into the glass. so, would that provide evidence that it is actually acute matte?

The screen with the black crosshairs is the standard default screen. It's hard to tell for the second. It looks like there is a central circle as per the box? One way to inspect them is with a microscope to check the structure.

You should see dozens of little circles associated with a rainbow of colors. Like a shotgun blast, not etched circles

So, I think the assumption at this point, is that the screens are the following;

42161 Standard focusing screen
Interchangeable focusing screen with a reference
cross. Standard equipment on the 500CIM ,
500ELX, 500ELIM, 2000FCW, and 2000FCIM.

42188 Interchangeable focusing screen with
split-image rangerfinder
Bright focusing screen with a split-image range-
finder, 7.5 mm in diameter, for fast focusing . For
lenses in focal lengths from 30-150 mm .

Both were available pre- the screen labeled on the box.

If you know anyone with a hassy, then you could compare.

I experimented quite a bit with Hasselblad screens. Mine came with a crosshair accumatte screen, which can be a challenge. It is bright but sharp focus is a bit fuzzy.
Iwas more successfull with some cheap screens from China. They are much darker than the accumatte but have split image, which to me is the key to accurate focus. Unfortunately, the accumatte with a split image is too dear for mebut it must be the clear winner.
