I recently got to play with a compendium hood for the Hasselblad system, and I'm pretty impressed. I'm looking for more information now so I can procure my own.

He mentioned that the metal version is better than the newer plastic models. What I need is some general advice on which hood to get, and what the model #s are or how to tell them apart.

I'll be using it right now with an older SWC, a 50mm C lens and a 80mm CF lens. Future plans may include longer lenses as well.

The "plastic" version ("ProShade 6093" and "ProShade 6093T", cat.no. 40738 and 40739) are pretty good, but may indeed break in several places.

The previous metal versions however are not without their faults either.
I had to bent a couple of them back into shape on a few occassions. But still: better bent than broken.

Yet i like the latest version best, since it will work on all lenses (with the right adapter), and doubles as filter holder (though no good for grads).
Of the two 6093 versions, the 6093 T has the better bellows. The one in the 6093 (without T) is rather stiff, and tends to pull or push, depending on whether it is kept extended or not, with enough force to make the bellows creep, and/or skew the thing.
The 6093 T also has a better brake, preventing bellows creep.

The previous version ("Professional lens shade 50-70", cat.no. 40676), the one with the foldable rail, is fine too.
It cannot be used with lenses having a mount larger than bayonet 70. And it will only take 75 mm gel filters in a slot in the adapter ring.

The oldest version ("Professional lens shade", cat.no. 40231) is much the same, but without the foldable rail.

One thing is that you will need the appropriate adapter rings, no matter what type you go for.
The earlier two use the same adapter rings. The ones for the 6093/6093 T are different.
You are using lenses with series 63 filter mount, and an adapter for these lenses ("Lens mounting ring 63") is only available for the two earlier types.

Don't expect much from any of these shades when used on the Biogon.
You might as well not bother with a bellows shade when using the SWC, and use the short fixed shade instead.

I use mine all the time, it's the 40231 with bay 50, 60 and 63 rings. I don't expose any image without it.

Do you know if the 6093 & 6093T use the same lens adapters?

Yes, they do.

They differ only in the material the bellows is made of (less 'reluctant' to assume a new shape on the T version), and the extra brake on the 'extension slider' (the plain 6093 relies on friction, the T version hooks behind some teeth to keep the bellows from creeping).

Mind you: there is neither a bayonet 50 nor a series 63 adapter available (!).
So to use a 6093 on bayonet 50 lenses, you need a bay 50 to bay 60 step up adapter as well as the ProShade adapter 60.

There is no way (!) to mount the 6093/ 6093 T on lenses having a series 63 mount.

So the 40676 is the only version that folds up?

No.
The oldest style, 40231, is the only one that does not.

My description was unclear, sorry!
The two older types, 40231 and 40676, differ only in the track the rear end of the bellows slides along.
The old one (40231) has a double rod, with a pinion running along a rack on one side, and a locking screw on the other.
The newer one (40676) has a foldable rail, and the 'runner' locks by friction. Works great. Much easier to stow or store too.
Both have bellows tapering towards the rear.

The 6093 versions have a similar folding track.
Their bellows is square.

P.S.
There is/was another square bellows shade, made specifically for lenses with a large front end (series 93, or 86 mm). It was very useful before the 6093 version appeared, but discontinued when they did.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I ended up with a 40676 - metal style with folding rail. Got a good price and it looks to be in great condition.

Just one question - what filters will fit into that slot exactly?

Congrats! Good shade.

It takes 75 mm gel (or polyester) filters.

Hasselblad also sold a holder for such filters. Bu you can make a simple cardboard mount yourself too, if needed (all it does it add a rim so your fingerprints land on that, instead of on the edge of the filter).

It will also take resin filters of that size, provided they are not too thick.

Lee produces 75 mm/3" filters (polyester - not quite as good as gel, but not bad either. And not as vulnerable as gel too), which go for little money: about $10 - 15 a piece.
How much cheaper would a used filter be?

Wow - that is pretty reasonable. Now I just need to track down a Bay 60 polarizer and I'll be all set.

Hi Everyone, this is a very old post, but I have a pertinent question about the 6093 hoods. Will they work with the newer 80mm CB lens? The CB has a slightly fatter profile than the older 80, and I am not sure if the rail would get in the way. Thanks!!
