Hi,

bought a second hand Hasselblad 80mm CF lens and during transit the plastic focus ring broke. I've checked with the local authorised supplier which will cost around AU$90 to replace.

Any cheaper sources?

cheers,
Raoul.

My immediate response--and I could be wrong about this--is to suspect that any blow strong enough to break the focusing ring may also have affected the optical performance of the lens. If so, you may have to spend a lot more than AU$90.

I disagree.

The focussing ring is plastic, and is even known to break without identifiable cause, i.e. all by itself.

They break more often though when someone takes them off or puts them on the lens before mounting or after removing the quick focus handle.
They are put under some strain when doing that, and cracks will appear. Those cracks don't necessarily are completey through rightaway, and may go unnoticed until something happens that's just too much, and makes it crack through and through. That something may be not very much.

So my bet would be that only the rings has broken, without anything at all happening to the rest of the lens.

I don't know a place where you can get the thing for less. Considering it is a Zeiss thing made for Hasselblad, US$90 already is cheap...

raoul, where do you live? Samys in Los Angeles has the rings. Stop by and see Mike.

It helps everyone else help you if you list where you live.

Mine on my 150 broke for no apparent reason....seems to work fine without. I'm not 100% sure what they are there for other than cover the gap a little.

It appears that Raoul is in Australia.
I'm always intrigued by the design and engineering brainfarts that occur with even the best products.

That ring is there for cosmetic reasons, and keeps the rubber in its place.

My CF Planar 80 doesn't have one, in winter is a bit unconfortable to operate without gloves as the metal gets cold very fast an easy, yet performance wise, nothing, don't panic, it's not an important thing besides maybe for aestethical reasons?

Relax, it's just a plastic ring, nothing else:wink:!

Thanks for the input - will go with the AU$90 option. Looking on the web, it seems this is fairly common and can even be set off by temperature changes.

Certainly annoying to have a CF lens with cheap plastic parts when the old C workhorses are solid metal.

cheers,
Raoul.
