Dear APUG Members,

Was wondering if the A-16 or A 16s is an actual 645 size magazine, I have seen some at camera show
that look square but smaller than 2 1/4 size, then I have seen one that looks like actual 645 size once dark slide
was removed.....Kinda Confusing.

a) I am assuming that the opening for exposure would be in the landscape mode?
b) I am also assuming one could get 16 exposures on 120 roll of film.
c) was there ever an A-32, probably rare.
d) Every once in a while, I see them appear but not too often.
e) if someone out there has a photo of Hasselblad a-16 645 back could you post it, a picture of this
is really worth a thousand words.
f) what would be a fair price on a "bargain" user condition in your estimation?
g) 645 size filling frame with 80 planar on Tmax 100 would yield some detail and a perfect 8x10?

Many thanks!

A-16 is 645 in 120
A-32 is 645 in 220
A-16s is 2"x2" called Super Slide

There was also a code, A12V, for 645 vertical magazine:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Utiliza-Hasselblad-A12v-rara-645-Vertical-/122384680036?_ul=EC&nma=true&si=PLQpEUU6LOUxvrNy9BifH40%2FYzI%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

If film used is not an issue for 645 horizontal it is easier to shoot 12 6x6 and have a 645 mask dropped into the viewfinder to compose and crop later four frames lost of course, the vertical magazine is rare because you get 12 frames of 645 vertical only.
A mask set was available for 6x4.5 Code 41151 including a panoramic 6x3 with viewfinder masks to match but of course on an A12 back only 12 frames were available hence the dedicated format A16/32 backs.
The disadvantage of the mask is the metal frame edges are further from the focal plane than the existing frame, which means that if you want to include these edges in your photo (for a black line around your print/scan for example) these edges will appear to be slightly out of focus.

As does cropping a 6x6 frame :whistling:

Note: the image area for super slide is most commonly 1-5/8 x 1-5/8 inch; 40 x 40 mm. Two inches is the mount size.

Yep, I should have verified that before posting. I never used that format myself. Mea Culpa

I mentioned that 1 time and got some negative reactions, no pun intended.
Aside issues like (1) more work than it might be worth and (2) debris issues from the machining, which I would think a decent machinist would know how to control... what's the problem. It's just a mask, isn't it?

Could you machine out a a16s for a16 operation?

Additionally, the exposed film area would have to have a metal plate added and the square hole broached in. This is an exceedingly bad idea that could only be poorly enacted.

As others have said, it's not recommended. The mask plate has two very thin rollers at the top & bottom of the 4x4 opening. The cost to remove the pins & machine the 645 opening would far exceed the cost of a used A16 back.

FWIW, I have a an A16S magazine that I had David Odess overhauled in March of 2016. I bought the magazine for $20 and paid $242 for the overhaul - it needed a drive gear ($73) and some other parts.

Why did I have the magazine fixed? I like using the 80mm lens on 4x4 - nice portraits and it FORCES me to think about what I'm doing.
