I was given an older 80mm Planar C lens with synchro compur shutter and when I cock shutter manually it will not stay cocked. Is this a major expensive problem or can it be mended without breaking the bank? Any advice welcome.

This is not meant to be patronising but you do realise the shutter shaft requires turning through a full 360 degrees (almost) to engage?
It goes around a lot further than you may think.

As Chris says, the key must rotate about 300deg before it will latch.

The latching mechanism is right next to the key, the pin that has a semi circular collar controls the latch, and is used to releases the key when the lens mounted to the body. Probably it is sticky with grease, and is not latching the key. This fix is pretty easy and cheap.

However, if the grease is thick and sticky there, it's usually a sign that there are similar issues with the shutter and aperture. Then it gets more expensive.

Turn the shaft a full 360 degrees. If it does not hold after a number of attempts, then it may need a CLA.

Thanks for the replies. I have definitely turned it all the way round and it still will not latch. I will send it off to get a quote.

Problem was a worn ring on the latch control. A bit of filing to sharpen the indentations made it latch properly.
