Hello,

I have a strange problem. I got a new cable release for my Hasselblad 501cm and it does not seem to work. I put the camera in bulb mode and tried a long exposure. However, even after depressing the shutter release on the cable all the way, the shutter does not fire. I tried taking off the release and manually fire the shutter by pressing the shutter button and it works as expected. I have double checked that I am screwing in the cable release as far as it goes without applying too much force. Could it be possible that the release is just not having a long enough throw to trip the shutter? Or is my shutter release button faulty?

Thanks

I have experienced this problem with some of my large format lenses, and the one cable release which works well for me is the Nikon. It's too bad that they don't make it in a longer version, though.

Buy a Hasselblad cable release, it's made for the job.

A long-throw cable release is needed for the Hassy bodies, also for Pentax 6x7 / 67 bodies. Hasselblad makes its own cable release for this, as does Linhof — neither name will be cheap, but they will unfailingly do the job. If a short-throw release is used the plunger will bottom out without the shutter being triggered and many photographers unfamiliar with this have then taken their camera in for a service check thinking something has broken!

As with all cable releases the construction and operational integrity should be frequently checked — especially cloth-covered cable releases.
