The indicator begins moving from the first frame through the last, but I think it takes a couple of frames before it is really visible as I recall. It's really meant as an indicator that there is film in the back, and isn't intended to be precise.
I have never looked at any of mine closely enough to see exactly where it sits with a fresh roll.

you should be able to operate the film position follower for your back with finger.

when i remove the shell of the A12, there is a pin moving by spring under the film roll.
i made a test and took a death film roll.
i load that roll and start to turn the film simulate the shooting process.
the knob Begins to stand out. during this process i saw the knob depend the roll turning
and because of the film was not tight the knob movement was not linear...
after approximately the middle of the roll, the knob was moving regularly and properly.

That is all you get it is a film loaded indicator to stop you using an empty back you need to use the counter as well as the film loaded indicator

and you need to down load the manual
