When I bought my 500C/M it was already many years (decades) old and came with the A12 back and 80/2.8 Zeiss lens attached. I've seen the front body cap that one would attach to the body if one were, say, transporting the body without a lens attached. My question is is there an analogous cap/protector for the rear of the body, were one to remove the back? I would think there is, as I cannot imagine leaving the shutter curtains unprotected.

Assuming such an animal exists, does anyone know what the part number might be?

TIA...

The body shutter in a Hasselblad 500 series isn't so much a shutter as it is a blind to keep you from fogging the film if you remove the lens with a back attached and the dark slide removed. The actual shutter is the leaf shutter in the lens. And yes there is a cap for the back of Hasselblad 500 bodies. This is what you are looking for though I wouldn't pay $40 for it, there may have been a plastic cap at a later date but I have never seen one.

Hasselblad made a lot of caps for the various openings and surfaces, there are several varieties of rear caps. The metal one in the ebay link is the oldest style. KEH has a couple that are a little less dear in one of the newer plastic styles;

All that aside, there isn't a lot of reason to store the body without a back unless you have more bodies than backs.
