Has anyone made a cable release adapter for a TLR ?

I have a Yashica D and needed one of those shutter release adapters to fit over the shutter button. I saw a video on modding a valve cap for a car which fit perfectly, however the dust caps that I bought are a tiny bit too small to fit. Has anyone made an adapter from anything other than a dust cap?

If you watch the big auction site you will find cable releases made by Nikon and other makers too, that should screw right onto your Yashica. I have a couple somewhere, but who knows if I can find them. Still, they are out there so just keep looking.

I'm pretty sure when I had the 'D' it was just a standard Nikon cable release adapter I used, the sort made for an F or F2.

I have one which I bought before I bought a Yashicamat 124G, (thinking I needed it but not required as the 124G uses the common conical type cable release).

I think they are called Nikon AR-2 releases. I think I read somewhere that they are also used on some of the Leica Barnack bodies?

Later I bought a Mamiya Six 120 RF camera and it looked as if this Nikon release would fit the Mamiya but the external thread on the collar surrounding the shutter button was just a little too large to allow the Nikon cable release to screw on.

To my understanding there is one type of such bell-shape thread adaper that fits both Leitz and Nikon cameras.

But you hinted at the Mamiya camera with a different thread. And when one includes cine cameras it even gets worse concerning release adapters.

I just checked itb the other way round: the plain bell-shaped adapters I got on different car valves: they only can be screwed over a few turns. However a differently designed model could be screwed over its full thread length even with a little play.

There is a DIY makeshift design using a tire valve cap.
I tried it for fun, plastic cap, and it seems to work IF the geometry is right, that is, cable actuator has to be hitting the release just right.
EDIT: maybe epoxy-ing a pad at actuator end as a fix?

Also, there is something sexy about "Leica nipple". I wish i was younger...

There is no need to reinvent the wheel when the part you need is available on eBay. Simply search "Leica cable release adapter" and you'll find several. They aren't cheap but you can get them. Complete cable releases made with the adapter are also available, you just have to do a little searching.

I've been on eBay and they're all stupidly overpriced hence the DIY route.

I didn't realise the gnarled ring by the shutter button unscrews allowing me to attach the dust valve and now it's works perfectly .

They are not made anymore, but are important if you want to use a cable release. It's a one-time buy. Once you have it it's yours for life (unless you sell it).

Leica type cable release adaptors are so cheap it's not worth it to go to the trouble of making one.
