I use Ilford HP5+ because there is not Tri-X 400 in 4"x5".

I like to remove the lens cap and then pull the dark slide. I often manage to do that on the first sheet almost every time. With my focal plane shutters and 4"x5" I like to remove the lens cap, open the shutter, pull the dark slide, then crank the focal plane shutter, thus ruin a good sheet of film with a diagonal before I start my serious work.

Then I wonder why I do not shoot sheet film often.

I got into the habit of removing the dark slide first, especially with larger formats like my 14x17.

I have an ILFORD Titan 4x5 with both “focal lengths” I printed the exposure calculator which is three parts f stop, iso, and shutter speed. I attached them to plastic disks and assembled them so they can rotate. I concocted a gadget that attaches to the cameras and indicates the angle of view. I use HP5 and mainly print the negatives in pt/pd. A fun setup to use. I usually start from an incident reading also

I used to do 4x5 pinholes with 25 film, I'd go for a walk for 1/2 the exp time then walk back to the camera, to keep warm.
Saw the video shooting with the 8x10 in snow when you went to take the camera back to the car and slipped a little l cringed.

And I was wearing my non-slip ice boots! If I did go down, at least the snow would have cushioned the blow
I did a 5 hour exposure once in Japan (not with pinhole) with the same camera, at night. I wasn't going to stick around in the spooky place (coal mine), so I got in my car and headed to a Starbucks. Never consumed so much coffee and carrot cake in all my life!
