Harman Photo cryptic announcement/teaser

Well, that's a remarkable feat for sure.

I notice that on the inside of the box, they manage expectations by implying it's an experimental product. So it doesn't look like something equal to Gold etc. yet. But it's a start!

BAM! looks real to me. Setting expectations, I hope this sells in buckets!! If it sells to people who expect something different. Limited edition will sell it out in a few days.

Get it developed here

Well that killed another week of speculation.…

Still pondering a link with the colour 200 iso film developed by inoviscoat though. (Adox colour mission being the prototype) simply because it could be a significant short cut compared to starting from scratch and either ip or people with skills might have become available in the orwo/filmotec insolvency.

It’s nothing to do with inoviscoat

Do tell, although i can see why the change in market conditions might result in more than one company planning a colour film at the same time and 200 iso is the main segment, coincidence

I look away for 3s and the leak appears and goes away. Just my luck!

Anyone downloaded the leaked pictures?

Google it and look for images. The cached image that was posted on Reddit is till available.

edit: actually I better delete this before the Harman agents come after me.

Easily found on Google... I'm surprised it took this long for something to leak! So we know for sure it's a 200 iso C41 color film. Neat!

"It's limited edition"...

If true, disappointing but consistent with modern internet/influencer hype marketing.

It's limited edition because it is just a first step. They're going to keep developing their process and when they can release a better product then they're going to discontinue this. At least that's the way I interpret the phrase in the context of the rest of the packaging.

As a product strategy, it makes sense. Release a product, manage expectations, get some revenue in on a new product line, try to make it sustainable.

But sure, let's shit on Harman for (apparently) making a new colour film.

If they can iterate quick enough and in 5 years get to something technically as good as ColorPlus 200, but with different enough palette to differentiate itself from Kodak (something like Adox Color Mission 200 did), it should be a success for them.

$10.99 is actually quite a bit less than I expected. In that store Gold 200 price is $11.89, even Ilford XP2 is more expensive.

Yes in the past, you needed big volumes to achieve low costs to stay in the colour market, ilford tried but missed the boat so remained in b&w. When the market crashed that smaller size was an advantage post bankruptcy, and due to now being few players and lack of capacity the market is open to a new entrant in colour even if the product isn‘t fully competitive particularly when the alternatives are so few with the main two brands currently offering the same consumer product.

The price and product is pretty much as expected, so look forward to some images. They are long gone now but when it was first announced there were some colour pics on their instagram page of a coastal scene, they could have been holiday snaps but I did wonder at the time if they were a cheeky shot with the actual product. I guess we will know on the 1st.

There've also been a number of very recent Instagram stories for Harman Lab that have had colour images & have been shared by the main Ilford account too.

Not unlikely - and for Ilford, who aren't starting from scratch (despite the best efforts of various people on this thread to prove they know better) with the key components for colour materials, it may have been very fast to get to 80-85% completion, at which point 18 months to MVP is not unreasonable, with the aid of specific knowledge, especially with both Inoviscoat/ Agfa and Kodak Harrow personnel likely being available (or being hired as consultants).

If this recently revealed information is true... the limited edition is disappointing, except that it does seem it is meant to be a stepping stone on the way to high-grade color film. In that case, it does make sense, and it is good they are explaining that from the beginning. Hopefully, even this first release is pretty nice. And the ISO 200 seems a decent choice. And it is C-41, as I think most were expecting.

It means 30-40,000 rolls at a minimum. AKA a minimum length full width coating event. If it sells fast enough and people like it enough, it will probably iterate further until Ilford are happy they can produce identical product master-roll after master-roll.
