Wilkommen Sie bei AUPG, Thomas! I agree with Roger -- I only wish my German were 1/10th as good as your English!

You're lucky to live in one of the world's all-time great cities full of artistic inspiration from its streets to its museums. Not to mention Salzburg and a hundred other towns and cities.

You'll love APUG -- great bunch of people, always happy to share their experience and knowledge, and ready to encourage your efforts. We know you'll have a lot to share with us, so we look forward to reading your contributions in the fora.

Hello from the Isle of Wight, England.

If the last time you used English was at school then you're doing well.

The only German I can remember from school is 'Wo ist die katze? -
die katze ist auf dem tisch'

Which isn't all that useful!

I even had to re-learn French four years ago just before a trip as I had forgotten half of what I learned at school.

Steve.

Dear Steve,

Depends. A friend of mine, posted to Japan, was much puzzled by 'There is a strange green insect on the book-case' (sorry, completely forgotten the Japanese). He was amazed when he got to Japan to find that there are many strange green insects that do, in fact, head straight for the book-case.'

And in my Tibetan primer, one of the early vocabularies memorably gives the Tibetan for 'baby sister', 'garden shed' and 'welding'.

Cheers,

Roger
