Gum over pd questions

Ciao guys,

I would like to try gum over pd and was hoping to get some advise on starting points.

Do you make the pd print to the same shadow density ( as if only pd ) or do you reduce the exposure to leave some room for the gum?

When you print the gum layer/layers, do you use a short exposure to mostly get the shadows or full exposure?

Probably depends largely upon your intent, as an artist and where you want the print to go, but I'm curious. If you have an example print posted that would be great.

Those are just beautiful prints and EXACTLY what I was asking. My best guess would be the top one was a full exposure of....... Yellow Ochre ?? perhaps.

Second... maybe a burnt umber or sepia only in the shadows?

Am I close?

Haven't had much time for gum over here lately, too busy with work...but thanks for that incredible shot of inspiration.

Thanks, guys. The first one has 3 layers of gum. The first is mostly yellow with a long exposure - maybe 3x my pd exposure. The second layer is a reddish-brown mix with a shorter exposure - maybe about the same as the pd exposure. The final is a layer of blue-black with a very short exposure - maybe 1/3 of the pd. These are all estimates based on memory, but they are in the ballpark.

The second print is one layer of gum with an exposure probably about the same as my pd exposure. This is much more my normal approach rather than the first print.

There are more here Dead Link Removed although this is mostly older work. I'm currently printing a bunch of my wet plate work as 14x17 gumovers and Hasselblad work at 16x16.
