I am in the process of sourcing bulk dry pigments for my use in color carbon printing (BASF and Lansco so far, may try more). I have spent weeks on this and am not done yet. But before I place my order I wanted to float this out to everyone and see if anyone else is interested.
Why bother? Well you can buy a 1 kg of Kremer color paste Quindo Red No. : 28600:.13010:.164 for $450. Contains 40% pigment, so your actual cost per kg is $1125. Or you can purchase the bulk powder for about $70 kg. But, the minimum bulk order is 20-25 kg per color.
Magenta is the more expensive color. Rough estimates for a CMYK color order, average pricing is about $35 per kg per color.
I am going to purchase at least four colors for myself for CMYK and I can adsorb the cost of stocking that much material but I would rather have a much greater color pallet to work with. If 20 people where interested in placing a group order of about $500 per person, that would allow the purchase of 12 colors. Each person would receive 12 colors of 1 kg of pure pigment (at total of 12 kg). This is just a rough estimate on all accounts.
I know 20 people may be the total world population of active color carbon printers....but any takers?
Why do you need more than four colors? Look at modern inkjet printing, offset printing, serigraphs, etc. Four colors is just the basics, its just the starting point.
What about dispersing? Well personally I am purchasing dispersing equipment but if you don't mind spending a few minutes and are only mixing a liter at time a hand mullur can do the job just fine for very little cost.
