I am in the process of sourcing bulk dry pigments for my use in color carbon printing (BASF and Lansco so far, may try more). I have spent weeks on this and am not done yet. But before I place my order I wanted to float this out to everyone and see if anyone else is interested.

Why bother? Well you can buy a 1 kg of Kremer color paste Quindo Red No. : 28600:.13010:.164 for $450. Contains 40% pigment, so your actual cost per kg is $1125. Or you can purchase the bulk powder for about $70 kg. But, the minimum bulk order is 20-25 kg per color.

Magenta is the more expensive color. Rough estimates for a CMYK color order, average pricing is about $35 per kg per color.

I am going to purchase at least four colors for myself for CMYK and I can adsorb the cost of stocking that much material but I would rather have a much greater color pallet to work with. If 20 people where interested in placing a group order of about $500 per person, that would allow the purchase of 12 colors. Each person would receive 12 colors of 1 kg of pure pigment (at total of 12 kg). This is just a rough estimate on all accounts.

I know 20 people may be the total world population of active color carbon printers....but any takers?

Why do you need more than four colors? Look at modern inkjet printing, offset printing, serigraphs, etc. Four colors is just the basics, its just the starting point.

What about dispersing? Well personally I am purchasing dispersing equipment but if you don't mind spending a few minutes and are only mixing a liter at time a hand mullur can do the job just fine for very little cost.

Art supply stores sell dry pigments that are used by artists who want to make their own paints, pastels, and printing inks. They're sold in smaller packages and at much lower prices. Daniel Smith is a good supplier:

Sold by the pound. Price depends on the pigment, but most of them are around $11 a pound!

Chris and Steve,

I looked to danielsmith and 21 colors 21 kilograms costs 1000 dollars. Some pigments costs 22 dollars a kilogram , some 130 dollars a kilogram.

Steve , I think you should list the pigments names and their market prices and your prices before request action

Thanks Chris and Mustafa,

I like Daniel Smith. I am looking mostly at the organic pigments that have high lightfastness, transparency when possible, sub-micron particle size, are hydrophilic, purity of color, etc. I am trying to find what is the best for my application. For me Daniel's selection is very limited to what is available from the manufacturers.

The reason I have not specified colors is because I haven't decided myself yet. I am open to input about specifics and if anyone else is interested I can provide them with samples.

I am not expecting that many people would be interested in this, but even if one person wants to split case orders for the CMYK colors that would be helpful and they can be fully involved in the decision process.
