Just thought I'd mention two lectures this week at the Griffin that look interesting. On Thursday Dave Anderson will speak about his work "Rough Beauty", and on Saturday, Martin Schoeller will be speaking there.

I may or may not be able get to both of these, but both photographers are very interesting. I've only recently become familiar with Dave Anderson, and think his work is really provocative, and he may be an interesting speaker. Schoeller is known for magazine portraiture.

I wish I could be there, Dave Anderson is a wonderful photographer. I had the pleasure of meeting him as a fellow student in a workshop in Maine in 2003.

So I made it to the Martin Schoeller talk here, and it was great. He loves film!! Someone in the audience said... "well, film is dead?" and his response... "don't say that!"

His work has incredible presence. Huge prints of these faces, some famous, and some not, but all incredibly honest. If you are in the Boston area, it would be worth a look. It's rare for me to respond so favorably to such big prints, but in this case, they really work. The images want to be that big. Book and magazine reproductions don't do the work justice.

As for Dave Anderson.. I was really liking his work on the web, and I think he has a great eye, but his prints were awful. So... he has a way to go in my view. I think he's off to a good start, and clearly great at marketing himself. I mean, landing a show at a museum when you've been at it for three or four years? It's frustrating, however, to see work that is well seen, but ultimately, poorly expressed and presented.
