Hi, I'm Albo. I'm an analog b&w photographer turned mostly digital for a decade+ of cinematography work in the film industry. Moved out of NYC to the woods, and shifted careers pre-pandemic.

While I still shoot my Sony, and do pro-level work for friends and small businesses, I am moving more toward analog and hybrid alternative processing for my own art. My interest is in pictorialism and art, vintage cameras, and dreamy otherworlds.

My dad, Bob Greene, was a dedicated hobby photographer for several decades starting in the '50s. He mainly documented his life, including travels in the Caribbean in the 1960s. I am working on an ongoing project to organize, scan, print, and in some cases develop his work. Sadly he passed away last December, so I hope to breathe life into the legacy he left untouched.

I've used this forum as a resource enough times in the past, I decided to finally join up and get talking with people.

I'm looking forward to any insights this community can give me.

Cheers!

Hi there! I do follow them online but I haven't actually visited yet. I'm in the sticks and Brattleboro is about 2 hours from me.

Welcome to Photrio, neighbour!

Being born in Haiti in 1962, I'm of course very curious about your dad's photos of the Carribean islands at that time. Hope you find the time to get these photos in order. Are there many still-undeveloped rolls?

Hi Alex! That's a fun coincidence. His time in the Caribbean started in 1961, when he was employed in Jamaica for a few years as a teacher of French and Latin. But he traveled to Haiti at least once during that time, according to the notes on some of his slides.

He went back to the US for a bit, then returned to Jamaica in 1964, after their independence, which is where he met my mom, who was an American teacher in Brownstown. He has hundreds of slides from this period. I'll add some to this post if I can (taken with my phone).

I've found 19 undeveloped rolls, roughly even split of b&w color, plus some undeveloped super 8. But there may be others in another box. I'll probably make quite a few posts about his stuff while I tackle these and his old negatives.

I've made some headway organizing it all, and I have a copy stand setup for my DSLR that handles the slides decently enough for family use. But it's a pretty amazing window into that time and I hope it can get a wider audience. This was a project I hoped we'd do together, but the pandemic hit immediately after I first saw any of his slides, and unfortunately various life things got in the way of it, and then he passed away last year at 85 after a short illness.

Please do! It's a rare and precious window you have there on a different time and place. Your dad seemed to have had a good eye.

Thanks, I think so too! He always encouraged my own photography but never brought out his old stuff to look at. We were all pretty shocked to see this artistic side of him, even though we all inherited it ourselves.

Some of his negatives are in pretty rough shape so I hope I can turn up some advice here along the way!
