Hey folks!

Just got back into film photography for the first time since the mid-90’s. Plenty to relearn, and while researching I’ve found myself on this forum numerous times. Figured it was time to take the plunge!

I’m shooting with a Nikon FT2 that I picked up fairly cheap - and of course dealing with the fallout of “saving” that money . Also have a few lenses that I’ve been messing around with. I’ve replaced the seals and gotten camera/lenses pretty clean - but I’m still testing the meter/exposure performances with the first few rolls.

A big thanks to everyone who contributes here. It’s been an amazing resource, and I look forward to learning more in the future.

Thanks so much. I really have enjoyed getting back into the slower pace I take with analog. And remembering so many little things that I’ve long forgotten makes it feel even better!

Well….i am finding myself doing a few forehead slaps when i keep half-pressing the shutter button. Turns out, that doesn’t automatically activate my left hand to get the darn lens in focus

But you’re totally right. The fun factor is amazing to rediscover. Maybe because it’s feeling fresh all over again, but also because I’m enjoying taking my time, and respecting the act of THINKING before shooting. Good grief. What a concept!

Yep, both the technique and the satisfaction have come rushing back - and although I’ve had some setbacks, I’m fully enjoying the old/new process again.

This all started from a desire to scan my old negatives. I’ve had an old Epson v500 scanner for years, but the challenges of outdated software, curled negs, etc got me looking for an alternative solution. Sifting through this old film produced an unintended consequence - remembering how much I loved the methodical nature I had with film photography - something I personally lost when I committed to digital.

In addition to grabbing my first SLR in years, I also decided to take on DSLR scanning my (new and old) negatives at home - an entirely new process for me.

Built an extruded aluminum copy stand out of a couple old 3D printers and a small CNC I had lying around the shop. Leadscrew handles the vertical positioning, and a ball head the rest of the alignment. Picked up a cheap enlarger lens, with various adapters, helicoid etc. Just last night I did some initial testing, and so far it seems very promising.

I actually put it down for 10 years myself. I got married, and we have a small house with limited storage space. I wanted to make some room for my wife by selling the old gear. I did sell a few things initially, but once I started going through the items and handling them, I started using them again, and got re-hooked. Now we have less storage space, but I have a lot more fun, and she enjoys the portraits she gets.

I hear you about the storage space. I live in a shoebox of an apartment. The room now being taken up by the scanning rig is cramping the place. Because of the shape/size, it can’t be easily hidden away or hung on a wall. But after seeing the possibilities last night, the lack of space seemed much less important

Well now the gear is piling up again, so we take turns using the house.

Thanks! The other benefit to my renewed enthusiasm for photography has been exploring the city again. I had been in a routine (rut?) where I barely left the neighborhood (Williamsburg) - but now have been getting out and about to find some good shots.

Have you been up to Domino Park? Some pretty interesting structures incorporated from the original factory. And standard shots/views of the Manhattan skyline are solid - because the lights are back from the edge of the deck.

I lived on N 4th and Wythe until 2002 and now live just on the other side of the Navy Yard. I ride past domino almost once a week but too populated for my tastes these days. I enjoy living in and wondering around derelict areas mostly, as Wbg was in the 90's and early aughts, but now I mainly photograph stuff stuck to chain link fences. Image 1- Domino park 2020, Image 2 -Domino Sugar Factory 2002 under a full moon, Image 3 - Williamsburg bridge from end of N 6th street 2002.

I had a recording studio on Wythe BTW N3&4 from about 2000-2014. It’s now a J Crew! Wouldn’t surprise me if we crossed paths around the neighborhood.

Agreed, the park is a nightmare these days during “normal” hours. But the hipsters wake up late - so, early morning I basically have the place to myself.

I’m stuck in here due to low rent - so I tolerate the masses that increasingly populate this neighborhood. I thought it was bad back in 2005. Good grief! Little did I know….

Nice pics! I’ll have to post up some once I get something I’m happy with.

Yea, across from that brick building 209. There was that cement factory, and a garbage transfer station, lol, I don't recognize anything over there anymore, feels like a different country that's 10 minutes away. I mostly photographed at night during that time then I would hit Iona, or Galapagos, or that place on the corner of Bedford and 5th, can't recall the name but I saw some great Motown style jams there.

The concrete factory was right behind us. And the transfer station created some lovely aroma in the summer…

Don’t remember the place on 5th - guess that’s the pizza place now. But I was at both of the other bars. Decent place opened on N3 & berry, probably after you left. Nice owners, and they always had treats waiting for my dog when I’d head there late night after sessions.

I’m looking forward to doing more late night photo exploration. Need to wait til I get a little more confidence - when I know my gear is working well.
