Great thing for analog photo today in Denmark

Hi APUG

I am very happy to announce that next saturday (Oct. 1) the international FIAP certified show, Silkeborg Classic Monochrome Salon opens. A show that consists of purely analog made black and white prints.
To make this an even bigger thing the danish branch of MetroXpress has given an entire page in today's edition to expose this show. The headline says: "Back To The Darkroom"!

An interesting quote from the Silkeberg Salon's website:

"The analog photography is on its way to become an exclusive art form alone on the basis of the decreasing number of its performers."

Would you agree with this statement?

It sure sounds nice and logical, but if I try to think about the implications of the statement, it turns into a mess.

See what happens if you would substitute the term 'analog photography' with some other activity that could potentially suffer from decreasing numbers of performers, e.g. digital photography, embroidering, sewing. Would you still agree with this statement?

To me, it seems a questionable move to define when something is 'art' on the basis of the (dwindling) number of practicioners.

Normally, when this kind of dwindling happens to a certain profession, it turns into a (historic) craft type activity, enjoyed by people as a hobby to be pursued in their spare time, e.g. cabinet making, weaving. Why wouldn't photography share the same 'fate' and become 'an art form' instead of a craft? Is it that crafts are somehow 'ranked' lower in the minds of men (which is unjust in my opinion)? Or does the art centre need to uphold some old fashioned kind of distinction between 'high' and 'low' art?

Unfortunately not, but some of my analog fellows from Århus are having some prints in. And another analog fellow is one of the men behind it.

No, I do not agree to this statement. I only wanted to say that it is great to have a show with lots of analog prints.

I decided not to participate, as I didn't want to win all the prices.....
I don't have room for them

but it IS a good thing. Strange to see such things happening in DK, as I consider this country to be really undeveloped () photography wise...

I never wanted to doubt that, in fact I totally agree with you, especially since it's all black and white. Nor did I want to doubt the quality of the images shown, I just happened to stumble across that interesting sentence of the art centre. As an artist and a trained philosopher, I can't help but react to statements like these. It's a basic instinct.

So no reason to be pessimistic about silver based darkroom technology. On the contrary: it has a great (and exclusive) "Back to the Future" potential.

Hello Morten. It's very encouraging to hear of these kind of events.

Similarly I was very pleased to read of a new Gallery, dedicated to Black & White traditional photography, which has recently opened in Adelaide. A good sign I think.

Well, to me, this:
"The analog photography is on its way to become an exclusive art form alone on the basis of the decreasing number of its performers."

says literally that analog photography is becoming an art form alone on the basis of the dwindling number of performers. To me, the author says that anolog photography is changing ('becoming') from something it was in the past to an art form exactly because ('alone on the basis of') less and less people practice it. It's the process of dying out, withering away, that places the analog photography in the realm of the arts - at least, that's what this sentence says to my ears. Maybe you have different ears?

Apparently so, photography is considered by some already an art form, analog photography by virtue of being practiced by less people will become more "exclusive," meaning there will be less photographs made this way.

The author did not say, "well, since there are less people making analog photographs, it is now an art as opposed to a hobby." The guy is just stating the obvious, I dont see the problem here.....
