Fix It Again Tonio
First On Race Day!
Or, Found On the Road Dead if you're a Chevy man (boo). I wonder if anyone besides me knows what FIAT stands for? (I'm still in recovery from my days as a Fiat dealership mechanic)
These are beautiful cameras, and that's a nifty price. You'll develop muscles like Charles Atlas if you tote it around in that case though.
FIAT I had a '71 124 Roadster, DOHC, four wheel disc brakes, 5 speed manual. Delightful little car, when it was running well! Despite a live rear axle it handled bumpy curves well. Of course, FIAT stands for Fix It Again Tonio. And that I did. I did the majority of my own work then, and on the FIAT I replaced the master cylinder twice, front wheel bearings, a U joint or two, cylinder head R and R when the head gasket leaked oil into the coolant (better than the coolant into the oil!) timing belt replacement at that time, and on and on. I was on first name terms with the local FIAT dealer's parts man, and lots of other parts dealers.
Ah, the joys of working on a DOHC FIAT engine! To set the valve clearances, you check the gap between the valve stem follower and the camshaft opposite the lobe with a feeler gauge. If it is off you use a SPECIAL TOOL to depress the follower enough so you can extract the shim which sets the valve clearance. THEN you use your handy micrometer to measure the shim, and go to your friendly DEALER parts department to get a shim which will effect the proper clearance. OH GAWD! A little better than a root canal, but not much. I'd rather set the valves on a Datsun L16 in the immortal Datsun 510, and they had to be set HOT!
And the way the unequal A arm front suspension was designed the bracket to which one of the arms was attached to the body could and did collect water and road salt, and came to resemble lace. Pretty scary. I've heard that the Italians invented rust, and then licensed it to the Germans.
Even still, tooling along in the FIAT top down on a warm Georgia night was delightful....
