Do 4x5 SLR Graflex's (RB, D, Super D etc.) use standard 4x5 film holders or ones with slots? Just asking before I go reckless on ebay again. Thanks!

They use the ones with slots. You can also look for 'Bag mags,' which is a precursor to the grafmatic. You can load either 12 or 18 shots and fire away! Just make sure you get one for cut film not plates. Check out graflex.org for details.

If you do find your self with a plate mag, it may have film sheaths, or you can try to find film sheaths for them. I have a 5x7" plate mag with 5x7" film sheaths, as well as 5x7->4x5" plate conversion frames that have 4x5" film sheaths.

You might also try Midwest Photo Exchange (mpex.com).

My two Grafmatics for 2x3 and my one Grafmatic for 4x5 have both the slots and the ridges so that they will work with Graphic, Graflex and Graflock backs. I don't know if they all are like this.

It's not just the slots.

Holders that fit a Graflex back are wider than normal holders that fit a Graflok or International back.

On a normal holder the lock rib on the holder engages a groove on the camera back to form the light trap and keep the holder in the back when you pull the darkslide. On a Graflex holder, the rib is on the camera back, and there is a groove on the filmholder.

Grafmatics that fit a Graflok back won't fit a Graflex back.

Your Grafmatics may have slots, but they won't fit a Graflex back. The graflex back is a different size, approx. 1/4 inch wider. That's why Graflex holders can't be used in 'standard' cameras.

So, yes, Graflex (RB,etc) cameras need Graflex holders in their Graflex backs. Graphic cameras with Graphic (spring) or Graflok backs use standard holders.

The slots in a Grafmatic are used to hold the unit into a Graflok back while it is operated so it doesn't pull away from the back of the camera causing a light leak.
