Can anyone recommend any books on printing techniques for black and white graded paper. I'm thinking older books pre VC papers which are mostly about printing rather than general B+W photography.

thanks

C.I. Jacobson, Enlarging.

Excellent 60's book, I learnt to process and print in the late 60's with this book along with Developing, by the same author. I have the 1940 first editions of both but the late 60's editions are much better.

If you can find a set of Fred Picker's Zone VI newsletters, it's very useful. You'll have to take some of his advice with a grain of salt (he was very opinionated and a good salesman), but the information on printing is excellent.

Ansel Adams' "The Print" should not be left out.

Nor should William Mortenson's "Print Finishing" - or indeed any of his numerous other books.

Off hand I'd say you will find no printing techniques used
with Graded paper which are not equally applicable to
use with VC papers.

So, VC paper users should also take note. My impression
after reading many posts is that at least some VC users
believe filter manipulation to be the only method for
controlling over all and local contrast. Dan

Actually - wouldn't 'the negative' be FAR more applicable to the general concept of printing on graded papers...? I mean- it's the whole raison d'être of the zone system to begin with...!

You're right Sparky - Adams' "The Negative" and Mortensens "On the Negative" are essential, too - but the print books are also useful.

Now that I've mentioned Adams and Mortensen in the same sentence (twice), will the thread explode?

Well - I was just saying that if you already print VC papers successfully -that a book like 'the negative' will probably help you with contrast control more than the 'printing books' might.

Fred Picker and Ansel Adams

I would second the vote for Ansel's entire series as well as Fred Picker's Zone VI Workshop. The Picker book is also compact and a good read.

Sincerely,

Hany.
