Silly question, but I keep on wondering why there is grade 0 and grade 00 listed on Ilford product material for the kodak filtration. :rolleyes:

Which one do you use?

Gd00 is just a bit softer than Gd0, I don't think I've used any paper softer than about Gd 1.5.

Ilford have a 0 and 00 multigrade filter. At the moment I'm using 0, everything I've read suggests most people use the 0, but I've never done a comparison between 00, 0 and 1...maybe do that later!

If you look at the Ilford Multigrade data sheet you'll see quite clearly that Gd00 is softer than Gd0.

Look at the additional filtration needed and the characteristic curves.

Single? You use 00 when 0 is too hard.

Split? Can't see it making any real difference.

The one that is correct for a particular negative. No one paper grade or filter selection is correct of every image. That's why there is choice.

For split-grade printing one would normally use grade 00 and grade 5 filters, although some use other combinations. Single grade paper is printed under white light. Multi-grade is printed using the filter combination that gives you the most exceptable results. Different makes / types of paper react differently, so experiment. For any combination of split-grade filters there is an equivalent multi-grade setting.

I had a hard time understanding what part of an image the grades (00 - 5) affected on a particular image I was working on. I was trying split grade printing. It wasn't until I made a test strip of the same area of a negative using each of the whole numbered filters (0,1,2,3,4,5) that it was clear what was happening. Try it you will be amazed at the results! It will also be very obvious what each grade does. Note, as others have pointed out, it is mostly dependent on the negative you are working on.
