Got weak negs with R09 one shot. Need help!

Hi,

I tried R09 one shot to develop Rollei Retro 400s and got very weak negatives( I used next proportion and time/temp: 1+25 and 10min 30 sec / 20 deg C

I think it was too strong concentration but not sure

I would be thankful for any advises
 
If your negs came out thin then the concentration was not too strong. If it were too strong your negs would be overdeveloped. That means very dense and contrasty. Theoretically you have developed too short, if everything else was o.k. But 10 min 30 sec sound to me not very short. Where did you take the time from? Is your Rodinal new opened or was it stored half full for a long time?

Welcome to APUG.

While I never liked Rodinal at 1+25 you've used the right times etc for the film/developer, and I always found Agfa's recommendations to be very good. Maybe you made a mistake with the dilution. Rodinal has an extremely long shelf life and works fine even when dark brown, nearly black, and it must be quite fresh as it's only been sold as RO9oOne shot for a short time anyway. (There's Trade mark issues over the Rodinal brand name).

Either you under-exposed or mixed the developer up incorrectly. Also check your thermometer.

very weak meaning thin with little detail? If so then its unlikely the solution was too strong.
Your times look ballpark Ok but without seeing the negs I could only guess that there may have been too little agitation and or they may be underexposed.
Check everything again, camera meter, solution mix, temp, time agitation. Is this the first time you have used this film- developer combo?

I'd need to see the negatives to really help.

Please describe your negs a little more. If you have shadow detail, equal if it is thin your exposure was right. If not you have underexposed.

There could be a mixing error, describe the amounts of R09 and water that you mixed exactly.

Could it be possible that some hypo (fixer) rests in the jar where you mixed the developer contamined your developing solution?

Different agitation techniques would not lead to very thin negatives.

RR400S does not have anything common with APX400 besides '400' in the name IIRC.
It's from that traffic film family also known as cube400c / orwo tc27 / etc which all turn out horrible in Rodinal if exposed at EI400.
 
I used 12 ml R09 and 300 ml water for first and second time
 
There's a good chance the film's under exposed as there's one or two negs that indicate the dev worked fine.

Yes you're right, my mistake

Personally I'd rather buy film from a manufacturer that's designed for normal camera use.

That's nonsense Ian, cmon. It's just a development issue - not a film issue.

If you want to save these negs, consider selenium toning them at this point. Next time, adjust upwards.

looks quite normal and neither underdeveloped nor underexposed. I would say from this that your other "weak" negs are underexposed. You can also tell it from the producer´s lettering around the negs. If this is clearly black then your negs are not developed too short or with too cold developer or with a too diluted developer.

P.S. Try to cross check your camera metering with another camera or meter.

I have had a look and for me your negatives don,t look that bad, should print quite well,with plenty of detail,maybe if you want a punchier negative increase the dev time, try 1 minute extra, but I don,t think you need worry too much.Richard
