Gossen light meter

I've recently bought a Gossen Multisix light meter with tele attachment
that reduces the angle at 7,5°.
In the manual is written to correct exposure + 3 stop with tele but i made a test with
all my 35 mm cameras from Nikon F2 AS , the older, to Canon eos 33, the most recent ,
all the cameras gave the same readings and found the best setting is + 2,2 stop , so about a whole stop less.
I was asking if someone Gossen user noticed this thing, probably as these meters were
quite expensive, just for professional use and professionals used mostly slides in that times,
they were factory calibrated a little underexposed to work better with positive film .

They were factory calibrated to work correctly, not screw around with fractional f/stop offsets.

Isn’t the camera metering the whole scene, not a narrow spot like the spotmeter? Move the spot meter over the entire scene and you will see higher and lower values.

Do a simple test, at a plane of evenly distributed luminance, large enough to fill the reflective viewing angle of the plain Multisix.
-) do a reflective metering with the plain meter
-) do a reflective metering with the Tele attachment mounted and correcting factor set at the Multisix

Results should be the same.


If you want to check this result against TTL-metering with your SLR's, get to about same distance and choose a lens that covers not more than what the plain Multisix covered.


As BAC hinted at: chosing an apt target and apt viewing angles at metering is cucial.

I made the test again with cameras and light meter on tripod,
a small sign in the wall with a piece of scotch as a center,
light meter plus tele set a +2,2 stop , f.5,6 Nikon F2 + 50 mm showed 1'',
Canon eos5 0,7'' , Eos 33 1 sec both with 50 mm , Nikon f 501 between
1'' and 1/2'' so 0,75, Nikon F80 the same , Gossen showed
1'' perfect with 0 decimals of stop, while set at +3 stops as in the manual shows
1'' f5,6 and 8 decimals so should be about 0,75 in seconds ,
Probably is right the indication .
