Good quality labs

Hi, I am from NZ, the so called pro lab here is not that very good, I get water marks and water scratch marks on my slides - they are a Kodak Q Lab.

There is one other up in Auckland and a bit pricey.

I figured branched overseas. Who do you guys recommend in Australia? Have any of you sent film over to the USA for processing?

Shooting mainly 135 format, but after a couple of rolls with my 2 Kodachrome going to Dyannes (USA), I'll reserve 2 sets for 2 trips and then I am going to 120 format and 4x5.

I've used Bond Imaging since 1983 and have always had great results from all the processing they've done for me. Check them out online. I think you can download their catalogue or you could email them.

Photo barn in east Burwood is very good. They have been able to develop my 110 & 126 which no one else seems to be able to do. They have a darkroom to do conventional B&W & use automated C41 processor for everything else. There printer is a Fuji Frontier, they also offer other printing methods. Ken is one of the owners.

Ken is a very helpful guy. I bought an enlarger from him at his previous shop, and always had great service from him.

I've been using Lab X http://www.labx.com.au/ for all my C41 (120 & 4x5") stuff lately - they are really fast - the 40 odd sheets of Ektar 100 I took there the other day at 5pm were ready at midday the next day. Can't fault the processing/professionalism thus far either...

My pro-level lab is PRISM IMAGING in North Melbourne. E6, C-41 and push/pull services; scanning, file conversions etc. No wet colour work. Excellent for stat printing from reversal to any of the Galerie papers, and prices reasonable. It's worth downloading their not-inconsiderable catalogue.

Previous to PRISM was a cheap and nasty high street lab that botched 2 rolls of E6 processing: they got slapped with $600 liquidated damages. So it is vital to sniff out a lab that pays attention to what is going on, rather than "Oh, the bleach must have run out while I was at lunch...". Ugh.

WYNO's mention of Bond (post #2) I also second; I'd go there for my jobbing if it didn't entail a battle through incessantly snarled and bottlenecked traffic!

It's very disappointing that so many services are now so very rare in New Zealand; we analogues have all but been forgotten for the more rewarding carrot of digital. There is a pro-level dealer in the main drag of Papanui just outside Christchurch that does E6/C41 processing but not printing. Anywhere else has come across as a gamble I couldn't really chance on. Same in Dunedin, Queenstown, Wellington and Invercargill. Auckland so cluttered with traffic and claustrophobic that I spent less than 5 hours looking before getting the next plane out!!
