I went into Jessops today to buy some monochrome 120 film. The salesman apologised for the small choice available (despite there being more than usual) and said they would be ordering more very soon.

He also added "it seems to be getting more popular".

No it's not getting more popular, it's Jessop's are actually listening to us.

Last year I went into Jessops on a rare trip back to the UK, and found 2 rolls of B&W film, I emailed a senior manager in Leicester pointing out serious photographers don't by 1 or 2 rolls at a time. A week later the shop had far larger stock levels of film.

I happened to mention that Boots the Chemist had far better stock levels of film, and they aren't even a High Street chain of Photo-stores.

Jessop lost "Focus" and forgot that not everyone wanted to use digital.

Good news if branches are carrying larger stock but I have yet to see it. Mind you Leamington in Warwickshire does take film out of a fridge for you which I take to be a sign of "trying harder". What Jessops seem to be relying on is their online ordering system which I have to say is working very well. I can order stock in the evening and get an email reply that same evening stating that it will be at the branch of my choice by the next day in most cases and sometimes by 9:30am the next day. In the few branches( South Mids) I have patronised the staff seem more turned on to analogue than before. They had reached a point where you almost got a look reserved for the educationally sub normal if you asked about analogue. Nothing like a financial crisis to focus the mind as they say.

I have to say that my local jessops does have a large amount of film, and knowledge. When I was there i was able to have a 15 minute conversation (a mini-lesson) on how to develop film for the first time, that helped a great deal. Well done them.
