Good book on digital image editing?

I'm looking for book recommendations on digital image editing. Not crazy image editing, just the essentials, but advanced essential techniques, sharpening, color and curves, HDR etc. Something very new and up to date preferably.

A good resource book would be one by Martin Evening. His books that I am familiar with concern PhotoShop and are titled PhotoShop CS-- for Photographers. They are well written beautifully illustrated and easy to follow.
