We just went there before Christmas. It is fabulous! The Watkins show is stunning, although the docent (teaching assistant) mis-spoke about the camera replica on exhibit. She said something about a mirror inside. I had to correct her. She asked how I knew and I told her that I use similar, but smaller (4x5, 8x10, 11x14) cameras. She was quite surprised to hear that people still used view cameras??? Anyway, I have a few photos on my blog at http://rcodaphotography.blogspot.com/2008/12/pictures-at-exhibition.html if anyone is interested.

We spent ALL DAY there on a Saturday (they're open till 9 PM) and had dinner at their wonderful restaurant.

Indeed a great place - wish I could be there. Don't miss any of it, it is all worth the time. If you have any extra time, check out the National Cemetery nearby, a really great resting place for those that served.

Just FYI, the museum is free, but parking is 8 or 10 bucks. The parking fee is per car, so includes as many people as you can cram into one vehicle. So, if you all will be meeting up there, and it is convenient for you, you might be able to save some dough and some traffic congestion by meeting off site and carpooling to the lot. Don't bother trying to find parking right next to the Center, as there is not any. Meet somewhere down near Sunset Blvd. instead.

...and while you are in the neighborhood, you can stop in to Bel-Air Camera. :D

Oh and don't forget LACMA in the Mid-Wilshire area...they always have great exhibits (I think they have a few photographic ones running right now). On Wilshire just east of La Brea, IIRC.

The big cafe in the Getty is a great place to eat.
Nearest art gallery is probably the Hammer centre at Westwood on Wilshire. They have 2 nice van Gogh's in the permanent collection. They also show contemporary art.
