Going To A Workshop... Should I Rent A Car?

I am headed to the Maine Photographic Workshop later this year.
I have two questions.
Should I rent a car? And I was wondering what anyone can tell me about their experiences there.

First question is when are you going and what workshop? I will be there in July for a Joyce Tenneson workshop. I have attended two workshops there in the past with absolutly wonderful experiences. The creative energy is unbelievable. I drive up from Philly so a rental car is not an issue for me. I would say that you don't need one and many people, I would say most, don't rent cars. Save the money.

I am attending "In Search Of The Personal", I have been awarded a scholarship to attend, so I am VERY EXCITED about going.
What else can you tell me about being there, and photographing there.

I can tell you that I did that workshop with John Goodman the summer of 2004. I can also tell you that he is amazing and you will never be the same. In a very good way of course.

Photographing in Maine is a dream. It is an absolutly beautiful place. Make sure you visit Tim Wheelan's book store which is right in Rockport. A book store totally dedicated to photography books.

What type of photography do you do? Professional?

Photography is my avocation. I do artistic, personal stuff. I shoot with a Holga, but I do some mountain bike photography as well.

In the course information, it says to bring older work as well as current.
What can you tell me about what work to bring? How old? How varied? How Much?

Thank you for the kind words regarding my work. I tried your site and was unable to access it. I'll try it again.

Ahh what work to bring. Given the purpose of this workshop I would suggest you bring a variety that is representative of what you do and who you are but it is really up to you. John will give you straight honest feedback. What to bring and what you want to share with him and the group is really a personal choice. There is no right or wrong IMO.

BTW we had a guy who shot nothing but chromes with the Holga in the WS and his work is amazing.

This conversation is giving me lots of questions!
I usually shoot b&w and color negative film with my Holgas. I have shot some chromes with it.
Do they process C-41?

Check the workshops web site. I don't remeber if they do C-41 but something tells me they don't. Cost and turn around I believe. Did you receive your WS package in the mail yet? All that info should be in there.

I guess they don't, I have only seen references to E6 and B&W on any material I have seen so far.
I have not recieved my information packet yet. I should get it in the next two weeks or so.
Maybe I'll have to shoot some chromes? Anyone have any outdate chromes they have no use for?

Rental car? You won't absolutely NEED it, but it will sure make your visit a lot more enjoyable. Rockport is actually a tiny village, and while very pretty for the first day or two you'll soon want to go to Camden (definitely too far to walk), Rockland, etc, as long as you're there. It's worth taking an extra day or two to visit Arcadia National Park (photographically stunning). My experience with a George Tice workshop was excellent. I've also been back to visit for lectures and the bookstore several times while working up the coast.
