Documents, one online in my area source for standard
and custom cut. They or any of the many others must
be picking quite a bit of the mount business.

Prices and minimum quantities seem very reasonable.
Have any some recommendations? May put off that
mat cutter and mats purchase. The printing and
mounting is enough to do. Dan

If you want pre-cut mats (custom cut or just 'standard' sizes) at a good price check out Redimat. I do not cut my own mats but they also sell matboards with no windows for those that do want to cut their own. Depending on the cutting machine, some people find it easy to do, others not so easy or just too time consuming.

Probably too far for you, but I have been very pleased with American Frame in Toledo, OH for anyone looking at this end of the country. They just cut and sent 1/8 " foam core, Crescent over mats with computer cut holes, and Nielsen frames for thirty 7x17" images, the day after I ordered them. I bought the museum non reflective glass at a glass shop locally who delivered. This is the fourth time I have used AF. Three times they shipped within 24 hours, once within 48 hours. The quality of everything was perfect. The Museum paid and I washed glass and assembled frames. Handling all that glass is scary.

Frame Destinations, one of our sponsors, does a nice job with mats and mounting boards -- good choices and lots of room for custom orders. I bought my last two loads of frames, mats plexi and boards from them and was pleased with the result.

Personally, even though I own Frame Destination, I have never hand cut a mat and never will. I would rather be out taking pictures. Before we purchased our own computerized mat cutters we bought precut in bulk. If you choose not to standardize on a small number of sizes and colors and only want to stock full sheets then cutting yourself can be appropriate. Although you can save some money, it will cost you time. Most mat wholesale companies such as Frame Destination and Redimat will offer substantial discounts on qty 10 and in the neighborhood of 50% off if you buy in quantities of 25. You will have to determine how long it takes to cut yourself and if you are able to save more than your time is worth and then factor in more subjective issues such as how much you enjoy it, do you mind waiting for another company to send them to you, are you able to provide the quality of mat cutting required for your needs?

Cheers,
Mark

Dancqu, I've used Documounts. They were superb at getting the order to me. It took about 5 days to process prior to shipment, but that's still good as I was ordering custom frames as well. The matt cutting service is also great. Buy in bulk to realize significant saves and get the consistency. I could do it myself, but it's money well spent in the long run to get them to make your window mounts.

We are offering an APUG discount on our Nielsen Metal Frame Kits now thru the end of October 31st 2008. Coupon code in the sponsor coupon section:
(there was a url link here which no longer exists)
