Aloha all, got my First Dagor, in barrel and I was wondering what shutter would be an easy fit. Not that it really matters, I use it on a Speed Graphic, but I'd like a longer shutter speed than 1/30. Its a 8 1/4 f8 (but it has the F6 F12 etc stops) from 1903 or so. Any Ideas are welcome! Aloha!

Take the cells out of the barrel, measure their diameters and estimate the number of thread/mm. Then go to www.skgrimes.com, work your way through shutters to Copals, and see whether your lens' cells will screw into a standard size.

At even odds they won't, very few lenses as old as yours will go into modern shutters. Think about front-mounting, its less expensive. The shutter will vignette, but since you have a camera with minimal movements losing the outer part of the circle the lens illuminates may cost you nothing.

Thanks

Thanks for the direction. Front mounting may be the call but it looks expensive for this lens (even tho it is a Dagor). I'm going to keep my eye out for those shutters and see if I can drop it in.

From experience, it won't just tighten into any existing shutter. These always had adapter bushings. The most common shutter for 8 1/4" Dagor's is the venerable Acme / Ilex #3. They can be made very reliable. 8 1/4"'s do show up on Ebay in Copal 1's from time to time but figure on spending about $550 by the time you buy the shutter and pay a machinist to make appropriate bushings.

Contact lensn2shutter.com. He keeps older, restored shutters on hand and installs lenses into them. The prices are very reasonable, especialy as compared installing in a new Copal.
