Just got my first 3 rolls of Kodachrome back from the Kansas guys, and I have to say, "I'm in Love!!!"

Albeit it isn't the finest grained slide film that I've shot, still shoot lots of velvia 100 and provia 100/400, but this is different.

Maybe its because I haven't seen any shots of my own in Kodachrome before, but now I'll be shooting a whole lot more over the next few months.

Long live Kodachrome!!! Thanks kodak!

thanks! i'm well aware of the kodachrome project, and support it a lot! I really hope that Kodak decides to keep this line of film up, even if only for sentimental value!

Just out of curiosity though, I've heard that scanning Kodachrome is somewhat of a task versus regular reversal films. What is it that makes it so difficult to scan? I'm pretty good with color correction, but is it just that it has not been formulated for scanning, as many of the current E6 films are? Being that it is a very old emulsion, is it that being designed for projection-only come into play somehow?

The main reason is the fact that the emulsion is "layered", resulting in a thicker emulsion. This means that light will not pass through as easily, making it harder to scan. The advantage to this is that the image is much sharper than an E-6 film.

The darker Kodachrome images tend to be the hardest to scan since the density of dark mid tone to shadow is, well, dense. But, it can be done. Silverfast donated their latest version of Silverfast Ai HDR and a Kodachrome IT8 calibration target to the Kodachrome Project and I will be testing it out fully on darker Kodachromes and will write an article on it in exchange for the donation. I am using it on a Mac Pro with 16GB of ram and a Nikon 9000ED multi-format scanner.

I am really glad to see folks using this film more and more and having fun with it. One day when it is gone, you will be glad you did and have your Kodachromes to hand down through the generations of your family for years to come.

That's why I'm using it! Besides, it has a much different look than any other slide film that I've shot.

Velvia is nice, Ektachromes are nice, but Kodachrome, its Superb!

who / where in Kansas and can they do Kodachrome 120? I still have 5 rolls in the freezer.

They only do 35 and movie films. A few people hereabouts have made some attempts at doing their own 120 Kodachrome processing, and there are several threads on doing your own, but I don't think anyone has managed results equal to Dwaynes.

I tried to process 120 a few weeks ago and got a huge color cast. I'll be trying again if I get a chance.

There is no lab left on this earth that will process 120 Kodachrome...in color. It can be done in black and white.

Too bad. Medium format Kodachrome in the Sierra would be pure sex. In fact, if I knew there was a place that could actually process the 10 rolls of 120 Kodachrome that I have in my freezer, I would buy a Mamiya tomorrow.

I have a thread on photo.net about Kodak PK mailers in the Film & Processing forum. The long and short of it, so far, is that Kodak [Dwayne's] is no longer honoring PK mailers with an expiration date. What about the even older PK mailers which have no expiration date? Dwayne's says it's OK to send the mailers to them. The Customer Service people at Kodak either don't know that there were such mailers or don't know what should be done with them. Late last year Kodak stated that even the expired mailers would be good until the end of 2009. Now they have changed their minds. I am still waiting to hear from someone at Kodak in Rochester for more clarification. Oddly enough, it is still possible to buy Fuji slide mailers (E6 only, no Kodachrome) and they are marked with a 12-31-2009 expiration date. Dwayne's also processes film sent in the Fuji mailers. I wonder whether the Fuji mailers might also expire even before 12-31-2009?

I wish they offered mailers. It would be much easier that dealing with envelopes and labels and order forms and that stuff. I use Dale Labs for everything else beside Kodachrome and they have nice plastic postage paid mailers with the order form built in. They are great.

Now someone else at Kodak has told me that even the mailers without expiration dates are no longer good. A person still at Qualex told me to contact Kodak's chairman.

Now that's bad. I have about 30-40 mailers, both with & without expiration dates, for print and slide film. I just sent a roll of C-41 off, and if it's returned, it's first a certified letter to Kodak, then a letter to the NY and PA (my state) Attorneys General if it doesn't get through.

I have been an avid Kodak supporter since day one, but cancellation of prepaid services without notice is at the least immoral, at the most illegal.

This is rather strange, especially since about two weeks ago I called Kodak to check that un-dated slide mailers were still valid, and I was told that there were no plans to discontinue them...
