Hi All,
I remember seeing a post about the longevity of Glycin and somebody commented about making a Glycin solution to stabilize the shelf life. Anyone have any ideas? I am using Germain Finegrain (this week, it's just too much fun!) and am concerned about destroying my supply of Glycin. Once the Glycin is exposed to air, what is it's shelf life??..Thanks..Evan

FWIW, I bought Glycin from PF and used some to make Ansco 130. I then put the remaining glycin, still in the original PF plastic container, inside a freezer bag and put it in my freezer. Over the next two years I used some for more 130 and returned the bottle to the freezer. After about two years I decided to test to see if the glycin was still good. I mixed up a developer with glycin as the only developing agent and tried it on film. It worked just fine. Based on this limited test, I would say that glycin will last a good while in the freezer.

I think it was Tom Hoskinson who make the glycin solution. I don't remember what he used, but I have been able to get it to dissolve in TEA, although there are reports that it won't. Worked for me, though.

I dissolved Glycin in TEA - I've got a bottle of the solution in my Lab. I'll check to see if it is still active and report.

Thanks Tom,
What would be the effect of the TEA on the formula??...Evan

I did not see a difference with Ansco 130. The 130 working solution pH is determined by the 78 grams of Na2CO3 in the formula.

To make an 130 "A" concentrate I dissolved the Glycin, Metol and Hydroquinone in TEA. I dissolved all the other formula components in water, then added the A concentrate to make the working 130 developer.

The viscosity of the "A" (TEA) concentrate could be lowered -if desired- by diluting it with warm Propylene Glycol

Thanks,
I'll try it and measure the pH...duh!! Thanks for the tip about the propylene glycol. The 130 is on my short list right now too..Evan Clarke
