Hello
I have started using glutaraldehyde as a hardener for Ektascan x-Ray 8x10 film, as it is an extremely soft film. I have a well ventilated area which I am using it in.
I have been reading different opinions on the the most effective ph level for glutaraldehyde. It mixes up at around ph 10, but I have come across some info that it is more ideal between ph 3-5? I have been using it this hardener for around 4 minutes and it does help somewhat but I am wondering if adding some acetic acid might improve it's effectiveness?
I have also read that this type of hardener will only last around a week and I'm curious as to why this might be so?

Thanks, David

I wouldn't do that! GA is pretty toxic and a lawsuit was taken out against EK due to its use. I have forgotten the pH but it must be used by a scavenger bath or some sort of chemistry afterwards.

I would use a Formalin / Sulfate hardener.

I have read elsewhere that formaldehyde is more dangerous than glutaraldehyde, as it is a known carcinogen?
I am using the glutaraldehyde at a fairly low strength (a 3% solution with 25% glut) and with an exhaust fan directly over the exposure area ( inches above). I am also using BTZS tubes, so no exposure while processing. I am not familiar with scavenger baths or what might be used for glut? As of now, I have been rinsing thoroughly before developing.
