I got myself a decent ADF scanner (Xerox Documate 6440).

Seems to work reasonably well to digitize some old photos, I'm trying to get through our family pictures and get them digital.

The problem I'm having is sometimes on particularly bright spots on photos it adds some glare. I'm guessing this is from the light that the scanner is using, but is there anything I can do to mitigate it? Example:
The original did not have those bright spots. I've tried messing with the brightness and the gamma, but neither seem to make a difference for the bright glare, typically on peoples skin

Possibly one or more of the (RGB) channels hitting saturation on bright spots.
Knowing nothing about the software for your scanner (not the typical photo scanner) it's difficult to be more specific.
If there is a setting for White Point, labeled in %, try setting it to 0%
Alternatively, try scanning your photo (temporarily) affixed in the middle of a larger piece of white paper, in order to force the software to care about bright values.
