Hello, it's nice to meet you all. I am a former Canadian living in South Korea where I teach English as a foreign language to university students.
I have about five years experience taking photographs but only about two with any seriousness. My university has an evening photography course taught by a very talented local photographer with thirty years experience.
My first camera five years ago was a Nikon F55 and though it was fun for a while, I soon started to realise its limitations. I then bought a Nikon D70 and started shooting away. "At last" I thought, "No more film costs." A year or two after that I read about the new FM3a and though I might like to try a more traditional photography experience. It was interesting and satisfying to use a manual camera but I still mostly shot digital photos.
When I started the evening classes at my university, I was still using mostly digital but once I learned more about photography and started to see what digital can't do, I started to lean more towards my FM3a. I suppose I don't have to explain to any of you the feeling of looking at a slide on a lightbox or seeing the unreproducable colours of film. Several weeks ago I bought a Contax 645 and I've started shooting medium format. I love using this camera.
I subscribe to a couple of other photography websites but one only allows pictures from a certain brand of camera to be posted and the other seems to have mostly photoshopped pictures. The images are amazing but they seem to be more graphic design than photography. This evening I started looking for a place to discuss 'pure' photography (no debates, please
) and to post and look at photos taken with film and unaltered.
I haven't had much of a chance to look around yet but I'm hoping this will be a great place to visit every day. If it is, I will certainly be paying for a subscription.
Cheers,
Marcus Peddle
